Blaz has MK buzzing

Blaz has MK buzzing

Blaz Emersic is proving to be an expensive signing for Milton Keynes Lighting.

Not only is the forward regularly seen marching off with a free case of lager after games, there is also a call for Planet Ice to invest in a second scoreboard to keep track of the Slovenian’s stats.

Emersic proved once again this weekend that whatever sum it required to secure his signature was money well spent.

He put table-topping Manchester Phoenix to the sword on Saturday, netting twice and teeing up a brace for line-mate Andre Smulter.

Lightning’s 6-3 win over Tony Hand’s team was their sixth on the spin in the league.

And hopes of a successful title defence were raised further on Sunday when victory over Sheffield stretched the streak to seven – a season best.

It was the mauling of Manchester which provided MK fans with the biggest smile.

After withstanding a barrage of early pressure from high-flying Phoenix, an Emersic blast was tipped in by Smulter a minute before the end of the first period. It gave the hosts a lead they would never surrender.

Emersic belted number two past Steve Fone seven minutes after the restart, before dancing through unassisted to double his tally only moments later.

Lightning fans were shouting even louder after Emersic’s laser-guided pass down centre-ice sent Smulter racing clear to make in four.

Curtis Huppe found the top of Barry Hollyhead’s net to reduce the arrears as the second buzzer approached.

Any hopes of a Manchester revival, however, were killed off when Lightning captain Adam Carr jinked out from behind Fone’s net to poke in number five with quarter of an hour still to play.

Hand continued his record of seemingly assisting every Manchester goal this season, setting up a brace for Marcus Kristoffersson. But Lukas Zatopek’s rocket shot with less than two minutes left secured Lightning’s first win over Manchester in four attempts this season.

By my count Emersic has now scored eight goals in a Lightning shirt. A more important stat is the seven wins and zero defeats since his arrival.

How Nick Poole shuffles his pack to accommodate the return of Monir Kalgoum will certainly be interesting.
