Lightning face the music against pumped-up Flames

Lightning face the music against pumped-up Flames

Personally, I blame the MK Lightning DJ for getting the Guildford Flames going ahead of their 6-3 win at the Thunder Dome this weekend.

Paul Dixon’s boys apparently didn’t appreciate the Fireman Sam theme tune which accompanied their entry onto the ice and made sure they had the last laugh by bagging the two points.

And it was not just in front of goal that the Flames packed a punch.

Neil Liddiard tore into Michael Wales in a first period scrap which set the tone for a heated encounter.

The two clashed after the Lightning man was clattered into the Guildford bench. What kicked it off from there I don’t know. Liddiard came out swinging like the 60s and didn’t let up after Wales hit the ice.

As Liddiard was led away to the naughty pen there was a further chat about the weather with Leigh Jamieson, before the Flames number 4 attempted a spot of remodelling in the penalty box.

Unfortunately, he didn’t have much time to enjoy his reshaped surroundings before the ref sent him packing – after all the fuss he was tossed for “resisting the linesman”.

Guildford may have been a man down but they led 2-1 on the scoreboard, goals from Lukas Smital and Nathan Rempel cancelling out Gary Clarke’s slick opener for the hosts.

Adam Brittle tied a gripping game at two-a-piece soon after the restart, before a brilliant wrap-around effort from David Longstaff had the Flames back in front.

Martin Masa then joined Liddiard in the showers after sending home captain Adam Carr sprawling with a high-stick to the face.

Masa collected a match penalty but that did not stop the Spectrum team sending out a full compliment of four imports the following evening at home to Basingstoke. What odds on the league burning Guildford for two points there?

More controversy followed with the Flames fourth. Rick Plant blasted past Barry Hollyhead in the home net and skated away arms aloft.

The fact Nathan Rempel committed a foul in the build-up did not stop the ref awarding the goal – yet when the game resumed Rempel was sitting a two minute penalty. A perfectly correct call I am told as only the lino saw the foul and only the ref can stop the game, but still a farcical scenario in my view.

Matty Towalski reduced the arrears with a left-handed replica of Longstaff’s effort. But it was game over for the home side when Smital smashed in his second of the night with five minutes to go. An empty netter boosted the Flames goal difference late on.

While I hate losing as much as I now dislike Fernando Torres, huge credit to Guildford for their part in the best game I have seen all year. The visitors fought for everything and were good value for the win.

Nick Poole’s men got back on the horse with a 7-3 win in Bracknell on Sunday and will need to be at the races this coming weekend for clashes with Slough and Bison.

I’d settle for the same level of entertainment that was served up during the Guildford game with a side order of four points.
