Let's try again: G's v Caps

Blog From Door 8

Whoever thought that a match against the Capitals would be cut and dry are sorely mistaken. Saturday's match was fairly even with both teams playing equally as defensively and offensively as each other. The night started off pretty much like every other arrival at the Odyssey, a drink in Rockies followed by the purchase of some 50/50 tickets and shirt tickets, this week would have been a particularly good win as it was Coach Thornton, our ex quiz buddy. Handed a voting form for the awards dinner I filled in; best defensive player: Tom Walsh, best forward: Craig Peacock, fan favourite: Tom Walsh, and fan MVP: Tom Walsh. I know Tom may not win anything because he's a stay at home 'd' man who quietly fulfils his purpose, at least he knows that he's appreciated!

Anyway... we made our way to the bridge (for obvious reasons) and watched the players warm up. It was funny to see Sean coerce 'that boy Sharp' into agreeing to an arranged fight. The drills over we made our way to our seats to watch the looooooong and convoluted entrance video, I mean it was good for the first ten times it's been shown but bring back the original video! Both teams came onto the ice and looked determined to say the least. The players lined up for the opening face off, Sean skated away to the bench disappointed that Sharpy didn't take the bait and go toe to toe with the Sheriff. The puck dropped and it was looking promising as only 34 seconds in Colin Shields found the net, the light went on and the celebrations began.

The first period ended and I grabbed a hot drink, ironically I thought that it was going to be a long match and that I would need to warm up. The period ended as the second period ran, equally matched with no goals and both teams struggling to break the deadlock. Then the strangest thing happened! A mad scramble around Murph's net with Caps players and Giants players digging the puck, then the whistle blew and Murph alerted the officials to what appeared to be a huge hole in the ice. Todd Kelman and Doug Christensen decided to try and fill the hole and add the three or so minutes onto the third period.

Settling down for the long wait to see what was going to happen with the ice news filtered through that Hull had beaten the Chavs and that Nottingham had lost also. It was so important that the Giants capitalized (no pun intended) on this opportunity to grab two points. The hole was filled in with loose ice and water and blasted with carbon dioxide. The zamboni did its best to rectify the ice and Doug and Todd decided that the players should give it a go, to check and see if the ice was stable enough.

The clock ran down, the players very suspicious of the hole in the ice and skating around it very cautiously avoiding that area of the ice. At 39:58 the clock stopped and the players left the ice and the task of plugging the hole began again. Todd apologised (for something may I add that wasn't his fault) and I sat back with my i pod touch playing some games and watching the start of a programme. When the officials finally dropped the axe on the game Todd announced that it was too dangerous for the skaters to continue on the compromised ice. Again, (and I know I'll face criticism for saying this, but I don't care because it's my own personal opinion) there was a lot of boos, what could Todd do? Wave a magic wand? It wasn't his fault but...um lets just put it this way....there's not an awful lot of rationalization around. For the philosophers in the world its not like Todd was impeding on the positive liberty of the Giants, but hey, I don't imagine a lot of people would get that.

The game has been rescheduled and as I see it, well we're getting an extra match before the end of the season that we weren't supposed to get. The next hurdle is Hull on Thursday, lets see if the Fortress Dundonald can hold up to it's reputation.
