The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
Its been a quiet month for the Capitals as always. Not a chance! No sooner had I written my first blog on the Caps in 2010-2011 than we had a failed bid to buy out Scott Neil, a new player and we snapped our 39 game win less streak. I'll begin by mentioning briefly the power struggle that never really was. One of the Caps sponsors over the years Ray Lumsden looked to buy out Scott Neil and move him into a hockey only role. Len Wilcox, a friend of Lumsden would be the clubs new General Manager. It all looked set to move forwards when there was a hitch, and the Lumsden/Wilcox partnership was no more. Scott Neil moved quickly to fill the gap by appointing local business man Matthew Tailford as General Manager. He will work closely with Scott and they will share the work load. As fans it was a confusing time, statements were made, rescinded and there was a football type falling out between club and local newspaper. Having been around the block a little for me it was an ambitious attempt to take over the club but Scott Neil believed it was not in the best interests of the long term viability of the club. That was enough for me.
Away from the East Enders like scandal off ice the teams form has been erratic, but for Caps fans we have had the bragging rights in terms of the Forth derbies, and that helps a great deal in keeping the sprits up. I'll begin however with the team's first point of the season courtesy of a 2-2 draw in Dundee on October 1st. That elusive point had been a long time coming for Caps, our first in 2011! It may have been a challenge cup game but that did not stop the fans celebrating Richard Hartmann's second goal like it was a championship winner. Thats the great thing about supporting one of the "small" teams over your title challengers...when we win there is no feeling like it as its normally unexpected!
The 9th of October however was a date all Caps fans will remember, our first win since a 5-4 success over Nottingham in December 2010, and it just happened to be against our arch rivals the Fife Flyers. An 8-3 win and the noise in Murrayfield's iconic building was incredible. The friendly natured "The Caps are having a party and Fife are going to bed" rang from the (slightly decaying) rafters for most of the third period. Finally Caps had something to celebrate.
Since then the team have recorded further wins against Fife home and away and a good road win in Hull 3-2. The team are short benched and really cannot afford injuries, however they just keep on coming. The impressive Petrina has been missing in defence following an injury in Fife recently, and Holecko the Caps second line power forward was injured in the home match up with Fife at the weekend. The first line of Hartmann, Jarolin and McKenzie will make chances and Jarolin in particular is razor sharp in front of nets. McKenzie is accepted as the most improved Brit by some way on the roster. The second line tends not to put too many points on the board but are a hard working forechecking line with Zembergs flanked by the Caps very own Little and Large, Menton and Holecko. Finally our third line is a little inexperienced at present and will need focus from coach Hartmann. Blake and Gatuschi are new to this level however Jordan Steel certainly looks to have grown in size/confidence over the summer. Hopefully they will find their feet soon as all fans want to see local talent develop.
The team are currently joint sixth in the league but its very early days. If the team can steer clear of injury and perhaps add just one more forward to the line up this squad may well remain competitive. The first line can compete, for me moving into November its all about the second and third lines, can they stay fit, healthy and most of all give that high scoring first line the chance to win games.
