The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
One of the big stumbling blocks about the sport of ice hockey in the UK is the lack of ice facilities - quite a major point for a sport played on ice. But what if you could play the sport with all the same speed and skill but without the need for an ice rink? Well in the form of dek hockey then you can! Dek hockey, sometimes called ball hockey, is played with the same equipment and rules as ice hockey but in a sports hall or gym and using a ball instead of a puck. Extremely popular in North America and mainland Europe, Dek is now getting a foothold here in the UK with teams springing up across the length and breadth of the country. There is even a UK representative team who last year travelled to Bratislava to play in the mens and womens World Championships - coming up against teams with bona fide NHL stars in their ranks! Several of the UK players will be suiting up for their clubs in this weekend's tournament - so there will be some of the best dek hockey players in the country on show. This Sunday at Gateshead Leisure Centre the biggest ever UK dek hockey tournament takes place with no fewer than 13 teams from eight clubs competing in the 'Fantastic Fours' (F4). Playing four a side in fast and furious ten minute running time games, the action starts at 8.30am with around 50 matches before the Grand Final takes place around 3.30pm with the winner crowned some time before 4pm. The host club, North East Dekstars, have been going since 2007 and they are entering three teams in the event. Defending champions the London Jets will be looking to retain their trophy, while from the north west we have Shaw Millionaires making their F4 debut. From the local universities we have Northumbria Sharks 1 & 2 and Newcastle Wildcats 1 & 2. Representing the pride of Yorkshire are the Sheffield Storm, while Nottingham’s Arnold club are bringing the Timberwolves and Wolfpack to avenge their defeat in the F4 Final 12 months ago. Finally from north of the border come the Kilmarnock Wolverines – a team making their first appearance in a UKDHA tournament. Admission on the day is absolutely free so if you're looking for a hockey fix and fancy something a bit different, why not have a trip to Gateshead Leisure Centre and support the Fantastic Fours? You can find out more about the host club, North East Dekstars, by visiting their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/nedekstars and by following them on Twitter www.twitter.com/nedekstars The author is also on Twitter @craigsimpson42.
Who knows you may end up forming the latest dek hockey club and bringing your own squad to the next UKDHA tournament!
Good luck to all of the teams on Sunday and may the best Dekstars win!
