The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
Just written my article in Powerplay, we touch on a few things but one of the subjects was Nottingham’s thumping of Dundee on Saturday. A few people in the sport think Nottingham were wrong to run the score up - I don't. I think they were right
There is a code, it's unwritten but the code normally works well and that is never to embarrass a team in their own rink but at home your main priority is to entertain your fans.
It's not Nottingham fault that Dundee weren't at the races on Saturday, it's not Corey Neilson’s fault that the Dundee goalie can't catch a cold. It's not David Clarke’s fault that the Stars had their back up in.
When you’re at home you have fans to entertain. Gary Moran and his team would have been working on selling tickets for that game for a couple of weeks leading in. They want their team to put a show on, not a half arsed effort just beating Dundee say 4-2
No, Neilson was right, the Panthers were right, run the score up, show boat at home, entertain
The Blaze however were also right not to do that a week earlier against Newcastle. After a 5 goal middle period they led 7-2 and took the decision to ease off, no quality shots on goal after 7
Why was Coventry right? well because the game was in Newcastle. You don't embarrass the home team in front of their fans when they are having an off night. Sure beat them, sure beat them well but don't embarrass them. That’s the code, unwritten but the code none the less.
New fans don’t want to see their team beaten 12-1 at home, if the Blaze had done that maybe some new Vipers fans wouldn’t have gone to the Bay last Saturday and seen the Newcastle side register a great win over Hull.
Neilson and Thompson were both right for doing very different things, they obeyed the code and the Hockey Gods will look down on them well.
