Something about Dundee I like
There is something about the Dundee Stars that I like. It might be that their head coach is an old player of mine, it might be that the Ward brothers are good people. The thing I think I like about them the most though is this. They are giving the ball a kick - they are trying.
A new team against a lot of old pro's the Stars were always up against it. Add to that a new first year coach, only one other player that knew the league a few Brits who hadn't been tested at this level.
The Brits have been a very pleasant surprise, all seem good guys, all have over achieved and all can carry their heads high with their start to the first year in the league.
The Stars tried to make an impact with the signing of Sean McMorrow, a big man, a big personality, a big character and someone who they thought would set alight their franchise.
Early on it became clear to all that the Stars had made a few mistakes. Their goalie Jerad Kaufmann was obviously not up to the job, scoring was an issue and McMorrow couldn't find enough people to fight to make his role acceptable.
But what I like about Ceman and the Stars is that they have quietly gone about trying to individually go through their issues and resolve them one by one.
Kaufmanns injury came at the wrong time for Dundee, surely Kaufmann would have been released that week if his injury had not arisen. Kudrna has given the Stars a platform, some foundation for Dundee to build on
Build on they have, not only their first win but better performances as well. Scoring was an issue and the arrival of Jay Latulippe can't come soon enough. His style of play is suited to the Stars.
The removal of McMorrow was both sad but so obvious to onlookers. Sad because Sean is a good man, and he cares, something that is hard to find in a lot of players in this day and age.
It is not obvious that you can only sign a Sean McMorrow if you are either stacked with talent and he became the 10th / 11th forward or if every other team in the league has a McMorrow styled player as well.
I'm told that Sean's departure will allow both Latulippe and a new D man enter the Stars line up. I don't think the swapping should end there either. MacLean is a lucky man to still be in work, he needs to wake up and get going before someone wakes him up and packs his bags.
Through all this the Wards and Ceman have just got on with their job, they are experienced people and whilst people like me have made comment after comment on weekly TV shows, Radio Programmes and magazine articles they have diligently got on with their job. Seen the issues and resolved them.
Off the ice they work as hard as they do on it. The coverage they first gave us for the SKY show was horrible but their TV people saw that as well and every week tried to improve - which they did. The Stars were on to Televideo asking for help and advice, what a refreshing change. Dundee invested in a new camera so that their coverage of their product improved, showing their team in a better light.
What a great pity the people in Edinburgh don't follow suit.
So well done to the Wards, well done to Dan Ceman and Brent Hughes, well done to that Makway for playing 40 minutes a night and doing it all, well done to the Jocks that play for the Stars for doing a great job.
All we need now for the Stars to invest in is a defibrillator for that Zarb chap to get him going, he looks like he has the talent, the skills and the ability. He just looks half asleep - I'm sure he isn't but he looks like it.
I want Danny and the Stars to make the Play Offs - Come on Dundee
