The old arguement of spending

The old arguement of spending

Always interested to read the local papers and the take they have on their clubs.

I also find it funny how their approach is different when covering hockey to that of say Football.

Example. If Manchester United beat Hull FC would the Hull Daily Mail lead with “Big Spending United” you know I don’t think they would, yet when the Steelers beat the Stingrays that’s the lead.

To me it’s almost like an excuse “look this is the reason we lost, the others are just spending more money than us”

I wonder then why such papers would use the headline “Stingrays crash to cheaper budget side Dundee” but they didn’t. Strange.

It’s not just the Hull paper. Every paper does it when it suits. When I was at Sheffield I tried to get a similar message across when it needed. It just seems that the hockey press get away with it where as the Football writers wouldn’t look so much down that road.

Paddy O’Connor is a good mate of mine, top old boy. However with his team struggling right now even old “Cuddles” has resorted to the ££££££ issue

I sympathise greatly with Newcastle, probably more with them than some of the other teams because the Vipers do work bloody hard at it. I find it hard to believe that any club try’s harder than Newcastle to get bums on seats.

Their venue isn’t what you would call welcoming, the whole sell there is the toughest around. This means the budget isn’t as high as Paddy, Jamie and Danny Stewart would like.

Paddy has come out and had a shot at the so called Big spenders, forgetting a little that only a few years ago he was a big spender with Newcastle himself. Not the biggest by any means but he and his side were up there.

Also the same excuse, the one of the pound note isn’t brought up when Edinburgh beat Newcastle 7-4 and 6-1 or Hull 4-2. If it is an excuse then it has to be an excuse for every day not just on the some days. I’m not getting at Paddy, he and his team are trying everything to make the Vipers a success and if I wish any team and group luck it is them.

Newcastle have a big couple of weeks, they have home games against teams in their division. This starts on Saturday when Edinburgh go to the Bay, the following Saturday Hull. Those are the games Stewart and his team have to win.

Just my thoughts on a Friday morning.
