The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
Hello ladies and gentlemen, well it was a bitter sweet weekend for those of us in Sheffield. Saturday's game in Nottingham was epic. It had a little bit of everything and most satisfyingly for the Steelers it resulted in victory. It was the best Steelers panthers game I have seen in quite some time.
To be honest going into it I didn't think we would win. Truth be told I don't believe we are good enough to win the Elite League. However when I take a look around I don't think we are any worse than the rest of the pack. I just don't think we have the defence or the goaltender to do it week in week out. I hope I’m wrong and on Saturday at least I was. If we had one problem Saturday it was that we really struggled to clear or zone and gave up several turnovers. Mustukovs will probably want the goal he let in back as really he should be saving that shot but that aside he was solid. I think one thing that is very clear is that Rod Sarich is still not fit! Everyone has bad nights and Sarich had one Saturday. He was responsible for most of the turnovers and often seemed to be chasing around after the puck and not playing his position and that's not like him. Also he seemed to be laboured when he skated at times. One man who was immense was Ashley Tait. He scored twice and led the way as he has done so many times. He is the ultimate big game player.
Now to the big talking point, the Lepine hit on Globke. From my view point it didn't look good. It looked like elbow first straight into the face and it was as Globke was on the turn so you could argue it was partially on the blind side. To be fair to Lepine I don't think he went in to do the sort of damage he did also Globke had his head down. That being said whenever there is a hit like that you are likely to be thrown out of the game so I don't see the complaint from Panthers fans. It wasn't the worst hit I have seen but it sure as hell wasn't a good one. Maybe I will feel differently after seeing it again on Sky but i doubt that. This left panthers with only one import dman as Jonathan Zion was out injured. Credit Corey Neilson he never stopped all night but it was an impossible task. Added to the fact that both Jade Galbraith and Alex Penner were thrown out for abuse of Official. Now boys I can sympathise nobody thinks Elite league referees are useless more than me but sadly they are the men in charge and you can't go around like Galbraith and Penner did. In fact Penner may get a ban as he squirted the linesman with water and threw his stick halfway across the ice in protest. Nottingham didn't lose the game because they were much worse than Sheffield they lost because they couldn't hack it. If I were Corey Neilson Galbraith and Penner would not be getting paid this week. They cost Nottingham any chance they had of getting back into that game.
So to Sunday Having played 2 guys down for most of the game the night before and the silly 4pm face off Steelers management have introduced the boys just lost out to Belfast 6-5. The 4pm face off is silly for 2 reasons. 1 it makes it tough or impossible for people who work Sundays to get to the game. I know as i am one of them. I missed 5 minutes and 2 goals yesterday. Plus it costs the team rest and recovery time. When you play Belfast at home on a Sunday chances are they were at home Saturday and have being up really early to catch a flight over from Belfast so they are very tired. This wasn't the case this weekend as they were in Cardiff the night before but often this will be the case. The early face off negates any advantage you get from the time and distance they have to travel. It’s crazy, it also costs you like it did yesterday if you had a really tough game the night before. Belfast were only a little better than us but they had more in the tank than the short benched Steelers.
Now I didn't comment on the Derek Campbell incident before because frankly I was unsure if he was guilty. Now having seen it on Sky I am still unsure. from the video you can't tell. He certainly had the opportunity I just can't believe a pro player would be so stupid. It’s said the league went on the evidence of bite marks on the linesman's arm so something happened. This is a tad confusing though because if they have proof he is guilty why the hell did Campbell only get 3 games. Andrew Sharp got 20 games for accidently hitting the official trying to get at an opponent. Campbell bit the guy for god's sake. Once again the people that run the league show a distinct lack of hockey knowledge. This is just my opinion but if I was in charge of the review committee and i could prove Campbell did what they say he did i would be considering a season long ban. If they don't have adequate proof he should not have being given more that the standard match penalty for third man in.
Well people we shall see what happens.
