Dark day for Steelers?
by James Broughton Well ladies and gentlemen it appears the dye may very well be cast. It has being announced today that Steelers owner Bob Phillips is to remain in charge. A dark day indeed for the Steelers. In an interview on the radio Mr Phillips confirmed that he has been given the money to carry on as owner by the Yorkshire Bank Group. He has said that we should now draw a line under this and get on with the hockey.
That will be difficult for new player coach Ben Simon if players who are under contract decide not to come back. Several players like Joey Talbot and Jeff Legue are rumoured to be considering not returning because of Mr Phillips ownership. If this happens it could cripple the club with just 5 weeks till the start of the new season. Phillips is staying despite the fact that nobody seems to want him in Sheffield.
Now Ben Simon. A player of great experience. A look at his stats say that he is no point scorer. He does not appear to be a fighter or goon. So one can only conclude that he must be a great defensive forward. Otherwise its hard to see why he has played at the level he has for the length of time he has. He has never coached before so there is a big question mark there. Plus he is a player coach. This is the problem for me. If you have read my blogs before you will know my feelings on this matter. I don’t agree with player-coaches.
On the plus side Edinburgh are said to be talking to another former NHLer in the form of Chris Gratton. Now Ok he maybe 35 but this guy has played over 1000 games in the NHL and would be the Caps biggest ever signing. It would also help raise the profile of the league. Gratton has being a Gold medalist at the World Championships with Team Canada.
