Edinburgh Weekend: Part 2

Edinburgh Weekend: Part 2

It was a chilly dark night outside on the eve of Halloween as we entered the frozen cauldron of Murrayfield ice rink for game 2 of the Capitals - Steelers double header. After the incident at the end of the game the night before it was expected that the Steelers and Derek Campbell would get a cold reception and that is exactly what they got. It didn't phase the men of steel in the early going as they set the tone with Robert Dowd ringing one of the post. Then with Edinburgh's David Lomas in the box, the visitors took the lead through Neil Clark scoring on his own rebound. Then within a minute the Cap's had a powerplay of their own with Joe Talbot gone for slashing. Edinburgh ramped up the pressure and Mustokovs who would be solid all night had to make several saves. The best of which were a close range reaction pad save and a 1 on 1 save up against Martin Cingel. The Steelers took more penalties to end the period but while shorthanded they fashion one good chance. A Jeff Legue bullet was thwarted by Scott Reid in the Capitals goal.

The second period is where the game was won and lost. 14 seconds in the Steelers extended their advantage as Jeff Legue tapped in a center pass from winger Neil Clark with an assist also for Joe Talbot. Then at 21:42  Steve Munn and Ashley Tait combined to set up Jason Hewitt who fired high over the shoulder of Reid. Then just a minute later it was 4 zip to the visitors as Rob Globke ripped a shot past the glove of the shell shocked netminder. Then the only real plus point of the night for Edinburgh but what a plus point it was. Young Scott Iain Bowie picked up the puck in the neutral zone and made a deke around Rod Sarich as if he wasn't even there. He then broke clear and rounded Mustokovs to fire home. The teams then traded minor penalties including 2 too many men calls and trips to the box for Kyle Horne and Jeff Legue.

The 3rd was a strange period. We saw no goals but there was plenty of action and some strange calls from Moray Hanson. Firstly on a delayed call against Steve Munn, Jerramie Domish touched the puck. So the whistle goes and Hanson make his call right? Wrong. Domish's touch on the puck accidentally puts it out over the Plexi glass. So Hanson puts him in the box as well for delaying the game. Now i guess Hanson made his call to the letter of the law as he should only blow the whistle after the Steelers make a controlled touch but is it really delaying the game when you are about to lose a man? I'm not convinced. Then even crazier things happened. The puck is thrown on the Cap's net and Reid covers up. Derek Campbell skates up to him to make sure the puck is frozen. Now remember what Campbell did the night before here! Reid spears up into his mid section. Campbell responds by slashing down at Reid. Now everyone piles in and Campbell drops the gloves with Jacques Perreault. It wasn't much of a fight more a grappling match but during it Reid came across and gave Campbell a shot to the back of the head. The penalties given out however were frankly wrong. Campbell got a 2min + 5min + a game misconduct for slashing. He also got 5 min for fighting, ok fair enough. Perreault 5 min for fighting, again fair enough. Reid however only received 2+2 for slashing and leaving the crease! Now come on Moray! Reid should have being gone for the spear that started the whole incident. I guess its another example of the old pals act of the goalie club. The game fizzled out afterwards and the Steelers ended the weekend on a high after the disappointment of Friday.

All in all a decent weekend. We learned that Adam Taylor is the Cap's standout player. He contributed to 3 of their 4 goals across the weekend and will give them the offense that could get them into the playoff's if he gets support. Also Ervins Mustokovs showed he can bounce back well after a couple of average games. Sadly we also learned that Derek Campbell lacks discipline and at times hurts his team rather than helping them. He did very little in all three games this weekend and if Ben Simon were thinking of making changes I would have a pound or two that Campbell is the one who gets axed.
