It's the big one tonight

It's the big one tonight

Ladies and Gentlemen today is game day. Not just any game day, but Steelers vs Panthers game day.  The biggest game day in British Ice Hockey and it will be live on Sky Sports. I truly hope that this game is as good as some of the clashes between these teams have been this season. If it does live up to it's billing then there can be no better adverts for our sport. The game on December 27th was the best Steelers vs. Panthers game I have seen in recent years. It had all the ingredients you want from a hockey game.

So who will take the two points tonight? Well that's a tough question. On the one hand you have the Steelers who are on a real tear right now and should they win tonight it will be there 16th win in 17 games. A great run but on the other hand you have the Nottingham Panthers. Challenge Cup Finalists after destroying Newcastle in the 2nd leg of the semi final. Despite that I think Nottingham are a team on a downward spiral. They have fallen out of the title race again and frankly they seem to have lost the patience of the Panthers fans and perhaps this could be Corey Neilson's last year in charge. If they fail in the Challenge Cup final and don't do well in the playoffs you have to think Neilson will be gone. Sheffield have to be favourites tonight and I pick them to win for two reasons. First this game means more to Sheffield than it does to Nottingham. We are still fighting for the league while they realistically are done. Secondly, we are 3-1 in the season series and a win tonight buries Nottingham on that score but it also shows that we have being the better team head to head.

Nottingham will be without Daniel Tkaczuk who was injured down in Cardiff. Plus their defence will still be adjusting to new arrival Jeremy Van Hoof who came in as a replacement for Jonathan Zion. I find it interesting that they have brought in a new D man at the last when that is what most people have said they needed all year long. Personally I wouldn't have axed Zion. Zion can be a lazy player at times but he is a player that can make things happen.  Guy Lepine however would have gone for me. I know Nottingham wanted to keep him for his toughness especially after Alex Penner left but Guy has often had less ice time than both Danny Meyers and Steve Lee in the games against us. That tells you that even Neilson may not have much faith in him.

Finally I just want to say well done Paul Ragan. The Steelers newly designed banners have gone up in time for tonight's game and it's about time to. He said he would do it when asked by the fans and he has kept his word. So far so good as far as the new owner is concerned.

Good luck boys lets make tonight special.
