Never mind the World Cup

Never mind the World Cup

Hello everyone, right then I have not posted a blog in a long time and so much has happened in that time. The Blackhawks lifted the Stanley Cup. England bombed out of the World Cup and now Spain are World Champions. However we all know the most important news has being coming out of British Ice Hockey.

In the EPL for me Slough made a big impact when they signed former Steeler Doug Sheppard. How many good players who were slowing up at Elite League level have dropped to EPL and dominated. Hell Steve Moria is still playing at that level and he has got to be like 300 by now. More recently in that league the Sheffield Scimitars are looking for new owners after the current owners decided to sell.

Firstly in the Elite League, Belfast hired Doug Christiansen as new coach. A great move in my opinion and i am so glad to see Doug get his chance to lead a big club.
We have seen the additions of Braehead and Dundee which is a real positive for the league. Talking of Braehead a slightly shaky start up there. First they appoint Calder as coach then he leaves and now they have Richardson. Well it was sad what happened with Calder and now he has gone to Italy and we have lost one of the countries top players.

On a personnel level i was disappointed to see Brad Voth go back to Cardiff and not head here to Sheffield. However our team building had gone pretty well. We had a very capable defence with the X factor of our new Latvian goalie. Plus we re signed some good core guys. Then on Friday a atomic bomb dropped on the club as the management tam all walked. Its very much up in the air at the minute and it looks like we may have a change of ownership but i think really very few people really know what is happened. One rumour is that ownership want Steve Munn as player coach. Now I love Munner but I don't like player coaches. I always feel that with a player coach you lose out on something. If you want prove look at Elite league winners. Not one had a player coach.

To be honest i was not impressed with Nottingham's rebuild. They looked like it was going to be another nearly year for them but they lost St Pierre and Replaced him with Kowalski. Now they have a chance. Top goalie in the league was Hirsch and he won a league title. Kowalski is a top goalie with a great pedigree. Also i am a fan of the return of Matt Myers. They now have a genuine shot.

Defending Champs Coventry have possibly made the 2 most impressive signings of the summer for me. They replaced a winning Goalie with another winning goalie. Brett Jager. A name i have known for a few years now and i expect him to be one of the top goalies. They also brought in Owen Fussey who had a top season for the Cap's last year. He is another player with a tremendous pedigree having played in the NHL.

Well that's it for now, keep an eye on the Steelers situation because the one thing I do know is that my club is hurting badly again. I will start my own campaign right now. BRING BACK DAVE SIMMS!

If it takes a change of ownership so be it.
Jim Broughton
