The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
Hello again everybody, well this weekend didn't exactly go to plan if you are a Steelers fan. The fact that we lost 4-0 at home to the Braehead Clan is not a good thing but it is not the worst thing that may have happened this weekend.
During the second period captain Jonathan Phillips drove the back post. As he did so he was hooked quite deliberately by Clan D man Jon Landry. The result saw the Welshman collide rather nastily with the goal frame. After an age he got back to his feet but could hardly make it back to the bench. Phillips did not return and there is a strong rumour that the doctors immediate diagnosis was that Phillips could have torn knee ligaments which could effectively end his 10-11 season. I hope and pray that this is a situation where it just looks worse than it actually is. Steelers are already without Rob Globke (concussion) and Mark Thomas (broken foot). Saturday was also the last game of Derek Campbell's suspension so we have being short already. Now I know, I know. Before you jump down my neck I am well aware that Belfast, Cardiff, Coventry and Nottingham have all had players injured for more than a week or 2. This however is different. Jon Phillips is a top end Brit and they are simply irreplaceable. Added to that is the fact that Phillips has being in the offensive form of his life. With 15 points in 14 games. If it was an import that was going to be out for a significant amount of time you can replace them but top Brits just don't grow on trees and by October they are all signed up. This genuinely could derail our title challenge and that's not selling the rest of the team short. You could say the same if it was Tait or Dowd that was injured. Brits that put up good numbers are vital in this league.
Elsewhere we saw a Jekyll and Hyde weekend from Cardiff and Coventry. The Blaze battered the Devils in Cardiff on Saturday with the Devils reversing the result in Coventry on Sunday. For Dundee the trip to Nottingham Saturday was down right ugly. The beauty of hockey this season has being better players coming in and teams being more offensive an giving us end to end hockey. The ugly side is that we will see a few games where one team hammers the other. 12-2 now that's a beating. we haven't seen a score line like that in years. Hats off however to the Stars as their response was to take Belfast all the way only 24 hours later. They went down on home ice to Belfast 5-3 but what was impressive was the fact that twice they lead the league leaders. The sad fact is that while they have being getting better week by week they only have 1 point from 12 games. Word on the street is they are looking to make changes but that's hardly surprising. I mean really if you had that record and weren't thinking of making changes you shouldn't be in this league. Its very tough for Dundee being their first year and all and i think if they are still here in 3 years things will be very different but right now they are in a very bad place. They need a new goalie because with all due respect Kaufmann just ain't good enough. Goaltending in this league generally is as weak as its being for years and he is quite possibly the weakest starting goalie around the Elite league. A solid D man would be most helpful up there too. They have the boy Makway who may not be their worst D man but at times he may be the one that lets them down the most. I have seen them twice and a few times on TV and I know it’s easy to comment from the stands but need something and they need it quick.
