The Hull Stingrays are disappointing

The Hull Stingrays are disappointing

Well folks I would like to say that the game last night between the Steelers and Hull was a great contest, with both teams battling for the points. Sadly it was far from it. The Hull Stingrays are a team that desperately disappoint me. After there first few games I really thought that they were the best of the bottom four teams. I felt that looking at their roster they had a couple of extra quality bodies that the other three didn't have. With the likes of Kalmikov and Silverthorn added to the experience of Cloutier and Dulle that they would cause teams problems, but the results of late have seen them slide and for me the game at iceSheffield was a real low point in their season.

I have seen the Steelers hammer some teams this season. Most of those games have seen us have just too much quality for our opponents to compete with us. Sometimes though we have buried teams because while we are the better team they have been frankly awful. The last game against the Newcastle Vipers was one such game. That night we won 8-0 and I didn't think we would see a worse team performance than that. Last night I saw one that matched it from Hull. There was no sting in the Stingrays and they lacked any offensive edge. At the back they were no better and Christian Boucher in goal was average at best.

Ben Simon opened the scoring with a tremendous individual effort. Having picked the puck up in mid ice he drove past the defence and rounded the keeper to tap the puck home. A second goal came through Joey Talbot who deflected home a shot from Kevin Bolibruck. At this point Hull hadn't been too bad but things quickly went down hill in the second. Jeff Legue was twice denied by Boucher in the early in the period but his resistance was brief as Neil Clark scored at 24:52. Then Joey Talbot had a goal ruled out and Jeff Legue earned a penalty shot for the home side. Legue went low on the backhand but was denied again by Boucher. Rob Globke saw a deflected shot loop over the goalie to make it 4-0 and he made it 5-0 as he broke through and slipped the puck through the five hole. Then at 36.55 a really nice goal from Tom Squires had the crowd on their feet. A great cross ice pass from Talbot was driven home by the youngster with the minimum of fuss at the back post. The final period saw petty much total domination from the home side. I think Hull only had 3 shots in the last 20 minutes. A 7th and final goal came from Neil Clark. The big fella broke through and slammed the puck through the five hole to round things off.

The Steelers did what they had to do. They won the game, they scored plenty of goals and Ervins Mustukovs who looked untroubled all night recorded another shut out. You couldn't fault them one bit. Hull were the complete opposite. All I know is this, Drew Bannister is going to have to be to this league what Bobby Orr was to the NHL if Hull carry on playing this way. Otherwise they are sunk. The problem is they like every other team in the league have their season hanging on how they do against the teams around them. Unlike most of the other teams Hull play badly in those games.  Maybe when it comes to the bottom teams Dave Simms is right. Maybe the rest of us should be pulling for Dundee!
