Where are they now: Evan Cheverie

6'1, 31 year old forward Evan Cheverie hails from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. I would describe him as a big flair player who could play either centre or wing. When I have watched him play he has always reminded me a little of Mark Dutaiume who played for both Sheffield and Belfast in the Elite league. He first came to these shores for the 2005/2006 season to play for Coventry. That was the year after Coventry won the Grand slam so expectations were high and Cheverie chipped in with 52 points in 43 games in the league that year. From there he moved to the top flight in France where he iced for Morzine Penguins. He played on a team with an Elite League feel. Stevie Lyle, Dan Welch and P.C. Drouin were among his teammates that year and Cheverie along with Drouin and Welch were the clubs top 3 scorers. He had played with Welch the year before in Coventry. From there Cheverie moved to the Norwegian Elite league where he played for Valerenga. He registered 39 points from 44 games. Former Sheffield Steeler Kevin Bolibruck was also on the Valerenga team that season. The following season saw a return to Britain but this time with the Belfast Giants. Cheverie played there for two years and they were perhaps the best of his career. By now Steve Thornton was in charge as player coach and Cheverie once again played in front of Stevie Lyle. Scoring 62 points in 52 games he helped the club win the Challenge Cup and the now defunct Knock Out cup. The following year saw another good year as Belfast had a good team yet again under Thornton. Cheverie once again starred this time with 67 points which was only topped by club captain Colin Shields. To top it all Belfast won the playoff championship beating Cardiff on penalties with Cheverie scoring the winning penalty.

That was the last time Cheverie played here. After Belfast he has spent the last one and a half seasons back in Norway with Lillehammar. The towns name literally means little hammer and is situated in central Norway and has a population of around 27,000. The club was founded in 1957 and plays out of the Kristins Ice Hall which has a capacity of 3194. Geographically the teams biggest rivals are Storhamar Dragons a team the Sheffield Steelers have crossed paths with in European competition. His first season saw him be a point a game player with 45 in 44 games but there was no one on the team that British fans would recognise. This season he is on track to surpass his points tally from last year with 35 points from 28 games. Again none of his teammates have iced in this country.

Like Campbell, Cheverie is a top forward who gives you instant offence if given good players to play with. Again a player who has a top quality wrist shot but I feel his best asset is his puck carrying ability hence the comparison to Mark Dutaiume. I would love to see him back in this league and he is good enough to play on any team in this league.
