Mark Briggs
1-3-1. No its not a new scoring system, a team’s record, or the start of a bad joke. It is in fact the Tampa Bay Lightning’s formation. Hockey has been entirely dominated by 2-3 for, well forever.
I would like to start with a nod in the direction of the Edmonton Oilers. I wrote previously in this blog about the New York Islanders illustrious history and subsequent decline, well the Oilers have taken this further, much further.
Although they haven’t entirely sorted out the geography yet, this winter will see the return of the NHL to Winnipeg after a 15-year absence.
Next up the North East Division and we’ll be looking at the Buffalo Sabres. An NHL team since 1970 they’ve been to the Stanley Cup finals three times but never returned with the Cup.
While it might still be a long way off, the opening of the football season, and the formality of the cricket has brought my attention back to that most noble of winter time pursuits, staying up late into the night watching NHL on the tele.
