The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
Welcome to the pre-Christmas edition of my blog, and as usual it’s gotta the same old stuff that you might expect from me then again there might be a few different bits since its now the festive season just a matter of a few days away. So sit in your armchair, grab a mince pie, a shot of whatever ya fancy and chill out with more thoughts from my head.
One match again last weekend, and at one of the toughest rinks you can expect to get one – Swindon. Games between the Wildcats and the Scimitars never seem to be quiet, there’s always something unpredictable about to happen. Already we had Swindon winning at Ice Sheffield when nobody expected it to happen, and then just a few weeks ago we came from 3-0 down at the Link Centre to win 5-3. See what I mean, unpredictableness of the highest order.
So would this prove to be something similar or would it be a boring hockey fest? Definitely a case of the former rather than the latter, as Swindon raced into a quick 2-0 lead so it was a case of Groundhog Day again? James Archer pulled one back to make it 2-1 at the end of the first, another goal in a splendid season for the lad before Steve Duncombe, yes our ox of a defenceman, and ENL stand in Chris Sykes turned the game on its head to put us ahead by one.
Just three minutes remained when the Wildcats drew it level and could have won it in normal time when on a powerplay. But the Scims stood tall and killed it with some brilliant defensive work, sign of a good team. Overtime couldn’t separate us so it was down to penalty shots and I’ll be honest…I don’t like them! Glad I wasn’t there (exams remember) otherwise my nerves would have been shredded beyond belief. Yet Pasi Bear and Slami did their jobs and we won again…phew!
So now it’s the pre Christmas games, Romford on Saturday at home and then away to Manchester on Sunday. I’m guessing Mark Stewart will be up for Saturday’s game, can’t think why (joking) but it’ll won’t be easy as Romford have beaten Manchester twice this season and not many can say that! Expect a few fireworks. Then it’s Manchester, and don’t think I am being picky but isn’t it time we won them for once...please! Our fans (excluding me as I’m on a Xmas do) will make their usual racket, and be dressed in fancy dress outfits. Should be a real sight, wonder if Manchester are ready for it? Guess you will be Tambo, if not you’ve been warned now! LOL!
I’d like to place on gratitude to say a big well done so far to the Great Britain Under 20 who are two out of two in Hungary. Keep it going lads, you can do it. Although, you have to admit that the scoreline of the hosts 28 Mexico 0 sounds a bit one sided. Yeah, 28 goals and a shutout…and also 105 shots on goal! That’s definitely a case of sounding a bit like a mis-match, just hope our lads can repeat or beat that scoreline when we face the Mexicans. Not that I’m being greedy….
So before I close, here’s a few awards for 2009, all EPL mind:
Most improved young British player: Robert Farmer, showing what he is really capable of and will be the next one to impress in the Elite League. Trust me he’s got the potential!
Giggle of the year: Buzz-bee (Bracknell supporter and friend of mine) with the outfits he wore at the play-offs in Coventry. Legendary.
Import of the Year: Well that goes to Nathan Rempel for inspiring the Phantoms to last season’s treble.
Coach of the Year: Jon Rowbotham and Colin Patterson, both quality coaches for varying differences.
Embarrassing moment of the Year: Getting a birthday greeting read out to me at Slough….
No surprise award of the Year: The look of James Morgan’s face after he had been on the losing side when he was subject to some banter by the Scims support. Yeah I know said it all…
Netminder of the Year: Gotta be Ben Bowns, has come on leaps and bounds this year. Thanks to Pasi’s help and sheer self determination.
Grumble of the Year: The view at Manchester for the away support, not brilliant.
Well that does finish it now for Christmas. Enjoy your Christmas and your hockey wherever you are and I’ll be back again just before the New Year with more mumblings. Happy Christmas hockey fans!
