The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
Twelfth Night, the traditional date when all of the festive period comes to a shuddering halt until December 25th again and the date on my calendar when I’ve decided to put fingers to keyboard and do me first blog of 2011. It’s been a really really good time to be a Steeler, as everything is starting to fall in place and we all believe that anything can happen and dreaming of some silverware come the season end in April.
This learned friends is down to one man, one man who is quickly becoming a bit of a legend quite rapidly in the Steel City. A 32 year old American who is making quite a name for himself in what is his first ever coaching role, in other words Ben Simon. After a troubled summer, Simon’s hockey is becoming the talk of the town and few can bet that he will end of with some kind of silverware this season. To cap it all, today he was named as the local media’s Star of 2010 which is a prestigious award in the City. He must be doing something right I guess…
And so Christmas came and proved to us all that really Santa is a Steeler and wears teal and orange. A four point haul from the games against the nearest and dearest from down the M1 motorway was just what we ordered alongside the unveiling of new owner Paul Ragan to replace Bob Phillips which was welcomed in S9 as much as a league title. Apparently by all accounts, the loss in the NIC got to one Panthers fan so much he threw his shirt at Gary Moran once Jeff Legue’s empty net (or should that read empty the arena) lit the lamp for a fifth time in Lace City for us. I could never do that; it’s only a game isn’t it?
Home and away wins also against defending champions Coventry now have added more and more credence that 2011 could quite easily be the season the Championship comes back to Broughton Lane, S9. So who can stop us? Quite simply, I fear one side more than anyone and that’s the steamroller from South Wales known as Cardiff. To win, at the time of typing this, 17 games in a row is the sign of a bloody good side and you’ll remember my blog from a few week back when I asked the question: “Can the Devils win the League?” My mates in Belfast believe they (Cardiff) look the real deal and well stats don’t lie. Belfast and Nottingham are blowing hot and cold at the moment and Coventry have had too many losses and injuries to count them in. One way or other, a Paul Ragan owned side is going to be celebrating I feel.
I couldn’t forget to also mention that the most outspoken but a bloke I so admire is back working for my beloved Steelers, that being Simmsey. Love him or loathe him, the guy is a hockey character and a legend in British hockey. I do wonder how long it will take him to start mentioning his beloved Birmingham City on match nights, just like he used to back in the day. Not long I would kinda think and you will know they’ve won when he asks those in the Church of the House of Steel when Simmsey asks if anyone knows how Blues have go on in a jokingly sense. Seasoned parishioners will immediately know he’s testing this out to those who aren’t quite sure what he means. You will know now though if you’ve read this blog....
I’ll close the blog as intended with the promised Eastside update which was missing last blog. Well things are still going well with just nine games of the regular season to go as the Steelers still lead the EIHL by points from second placed Coventry. Colin Shields has proved to be a great signing with 21+27 which makes him our top scorer but keeping the squad together next season will be the big close season challenge. We’re also in the Challenge Cup Final (over two legs) against the afore-mentioned Blaze so who knows I’m on course for “doing a Simon.” too.
See you soon. Yours as always in hockey,
Mark
