Its not the end of the world

Its not the end of the world

They say losing to the ones that you don’t want to is a feeling that you never want to experience again. Sometimes, these kind of losses are the ones that kick-start you and you come out of it better and more determined to put it with a backlash against the next one who stands in your way. I’ve experienced this as a supporter twice in the last couple of weeks and both times the teams in question have bounced back straight away positively. If only Sunderland can do the same as Celtic and the Steelers….

As you know I penned me last blog, the first of the new season, just before the Steelers went down to Lace City for a Challenge Cup match with the return two days later. The statistics don’t lie and both teams came out of the matches with a win apiece in each other’s barn. Think about it, it could have been worse. Bragging rights shared on the two matches, but you could say that we share a slight upper hand as we have won already there in the league. Still there’s time for this to change as we’re only two months in.

Mam was in residence for the home game against the Panthers, her first visit to the House of Steel this season and before the match started I was quietly confident we could win. I suppose that evaporated when I heard that Tom Darnell was to be in charge, I always reckon we are in for a game which could quite easily go against us when he officiates. Friday saw that become a reality unfortunately.  Yet we played oh so well for the first period then as you say, the wheels came off spectacularly. Penner was a pain, but then again that’s what the Panthers management pay him to be. I do reckon he was lucky not to get thrown out, but then again that’s my rose tinted viewpoint on him.

Still we had to bounce back straight away, and a maximum four points from the Edinburgh weekend was as they say – just what the doctor ordered!  It certainly gives a confidence boost to the team as we get ready to have the Caps back in Sheffield on Wednesday night. The thing is that we could be second in the league after it providing we win this and the Stingrays win the night previously in Nottingham. Anything is possible for sure, and that’s why I love my hockey as much as nothing is a given. One thing does worry me though, and that’s “Soupy”. In 11 matches he’s already clocked up over 100 penalty minutes. I just hope he doesn’t become a bit of a liability with it, but then I can’t change the way he plays.

So can we win the league? I don’t see why not providing the smart hockey which we are capable of shows its true colours and there are no repeats of the pre-Halloween performance. I do not concur with some that the Moose isn’t good enough, what people don’t realise is that it’s his rookie season here and it’s some ask to follow in the steps of greats like we have had in Lehman, Greco, McKay etc. Also to those who think Steve Munn and Kevin Bolibruck are past it, yes I have heard some people mumbling this, get a grip. They are born winners and their experience is as important as we all buy in Ben and Neil’s hockey systems. I’d give my right arm to be them on the ice I tell you…

So then now as promised, I said I would give you the first insight on how my own version of the Steelers are performing as I recently embarked on another game of Eastside Hockey Manager 2005.  The good news is that at the halfway point of the season, we currently sit atop of the pile with a 21-6-3 record and no losses in overtime. The gap between us and second placed Coventry is four points but they do have two matches in hand. By some luck I managed to pick up Colin Shields on a freebie, and Shieldsy leads the way with 14+21 so far (also his 14 goals means he is top scorer). We’ve stuffed the Giants 8-1 (Fleury et al) at home and are in the semis of the Challenge Cup to face Cardiff. Watch this space as they say.

Well that closes this blog, time to get “in the zone” early doors and ready for Wednesday night’s game. In the words of Nina Simone, “I’m feeling good”. Enjoy your hockey wherever you are.
