Scimitars festive happenings

Scimitars festive happenings

First of all, I hope you had a very happy new year and a fantastic Christmas, I know it’s been a great time for fans of certain clubs and not so for others.  Hey, that’s how the old hockey cookie crumbles isn’t it?

For myself and the Scims, it’s been pointless and that’s so frustrating when everything had gone so reasonably well beforehand.  We’re now in the middle of a small dip in form, having lost our last three matches (twice at home) but with a bit of luck on our side then we could have come away with something a bit better.

Our first game over Christmas and New Year was against Guildford, and we had some friends up from Surrey to meet up with after it hadn’t been possible earlier in the season – mainly because it was a midweek fixture.  They were the ones smiling away at the end as the Flames got their due revenge for the recent beating we inflicted on them in their barn.  It wasn’t just a small revenge, it was being shut out at home and that hurts so much.  But we never really going in that game and it was only a case of how many they would score.  Their new signing, Hurtaj, really looked a class act – even if he had problem in translating a penalty call by referee Dave Goodwin.

Dave did provide the best entertainment though, and if he is reading this then he’ll hate me for bringing it up again.  Sorry Dave mate, but those who didn’t attend Ice Sheffield on 27 December won’t know what I am on about.  Young David quite simply slipped on landed on his backside, but thought it was so funny and was laughing about it as much everyone else in the building.  What a proper trooper, eh?  Definitely a case of getting into the Christmas spirit.  No wonder you’ve got your own Facebook Fan Club Dave, you are indeed a legend.

The game ended 4-0 and to be honest it could have been more if only Smital and Rempel had got their shooting skates on and Ben Bowns had been in good form between the pipework for us.  Still there was time for plenty of banter and a few drinks with our friends post-match, as well as sharing more giggles with Mr Goodwin.  Just as hockey should, no animosity and plenty of good natured fun with rival supporters.  Something you very rarely see in football.

Didn’t go to Slough on Saturday for family reasons.  Two years ago I lost my main inspiration, my Dad, and Saturday was the date of his birthday so it was a case of Mam, sis and me meeting up to get through the day together.  I still had a wee dram of whisky for him though.  Mind you, I didn’t miss much as after two periods we were 4 down.  A much better third saw Mark Stewart deny Rockman a shut out, but we lost another road game.

Last night’s game against Milton Keynes then became the main focus.  A win would put the pressure on Guildford to beat Manchester as it doubled as an EPL Cup game – our last qualifying one.  First period saw us lead thanks to Steve Wallace following concerted pressure around the MK net.  Yet MK aren’t flying high without good reason and they came out for the second fully energised and increased the tempo so much so that we were having problems keeping the puck out of our zone.  Nick Poole must really have had a few choice words in the locker room.

Yet we never gave up, and went 2-1 ahead thanks to Stewart netting his second of the weekend on the powerplay going into the third.  Some dogged defending, and despite only icing two imports (Slami had been concussed apparently in Slough) we looked like we would hold on.  But with just 27 seconds left, Kalgoum levelled and force overtime.  Heartbreaking to say the least.  Overtime couldn’t separate the teams and so it was down to penalty shots which as you know I can’t stand.  Unfortunately we scored only one out of four, and Adam Brittle scored the decisive one past Pasi (incurring a rueful smile from sibling Stuart at the end of game handshakes).  So that ended our EPL Cup hopes, and left me drained and devastated.  Joy in Guildford though.

Had some great banter with the MK team (Adam Carr and coach Nick Poole especially) after the game, as well as drooling over Barry Hollyhead’s baby son (he’s already showing signs he wants to be a netminder like Dad).  So it’s Bracknell at home on Saturday and hopefully we can bounce back and arrest this losing streak.  The Bees beat us last time they came up so they will be confident they can do it again.  Obviously I am hoping otherwise.  I’ve also got my first proper skating lesson on Saturday afternoon so that should be hilarious, hope Arran (Strawson) knows what’s he agreed to.  See you soon and I’ll be back with more ramblings in a week or so.
