The good times, the bad times

The good times, the bad times

To quote the title of a Led Zeppelin song.  It’s been definitely a case of both scenarios; well it has been since Christmas came around.  Scims supporters have had more their fair share of bad luck, and now perhaps with the season only a few weeks away from finishing – we might get a nice share of luck with an unexpected win in the play-offs.  Funnier things have happened for sure and then again, who is to say that it’s not nigh on impossible.

Since I last updated my blog a fortnight ago, we have had games which really showed what a remarkable sport hockey is.  Just lower league opponents in football have the ability to surprise the big guns in the FA Cup; hockey has the same in the sense that teams at the lower end of the league can beat those higher on their day.  After all, who would have thought that Hull would go to the Sheffield Arena and come win back down the motorway with a maximum point haul?  Betting wise you would have laughed at it, but credit where it’s due – Sylvain Cloutier’s men did exactly what nobody anticipated would happen.

And so, we had it too from the Scims.  Fresh from a 4-1 loss at Manchester the night before, I missed it because of other prior engagements which I couldn’t escape from in the end.  I did think about cloning myself but then again a) I am no Dr Victor Frankenstein and b) who’d want a clone of me anyway…one of me is bad enough let me tell you that!  So with that result in Manchester at the back of the mind, you would have got short shrift if someone told you we’d go to Guildford and win in their barn.  Even I, the eternal optimist, reckoned it was a home win guaranteed.  However, things don’t always go to plan do they?

With the scores locked at 3-1 in the Flames favour and just five minutes and a bit to play in the third, there I was in the Scims supporters’ forum chat room alongside a few others who hadn’t gone to Surrey.  I then uttered a phrase which now I believe somehow transmitted itself down to Guildford: “All it needs is a second Scims goal to make it an interesting finale.”; lo and behold at 54:17 Matt Haywood nets and it’s game on.  I then apparently said shortly after: “Wouldn’t it be nice if we scored a third to force overtime possibly?” and Mark Stewart nets our third of the game to restore parity.  Then the coup de grace I said, again apparently, “a game winner would really be nice, eh?” so what happens next – yes you guessed right: Stewart scores his second of the night and we win 4-3 in overtime.  So strange that if it was Chris Kamara of Sky Sports football summarising events, he’d be screaming “Unbelievable Jeff!” all the time.

With confidence up after this, it was time for the second double header in three weeks, Manchester on the Saturday and Swindon on the Sunday.  Talk about after the Lord Mayor’s show as the old phrase goes, it was a major letdown.  Even though we led 2-1 after the first against the Phoenix, we simply didn’t carry the job through and Tony Hand’s men (still missing Courtenay) completed a full sweep of victories home and away with a 6-2 final scoreline.  To rub salt deeper into the wounds, Stephen Wallace netted their third and being ex Scims player – well, it left a sour taste in the mouth of some.  Swindon was awful to put it bluntly, we must have turned in one of our worst home showings of the season and the fact we only lost by one is small consolation.

Our place in the play-offs is secured, well it was on Saturday night and our opponents are none other than Slough Jets.  Ironically enough, we play them this weekend in the final round of matches in the regular season so it will be a decent dress rehearsal and you can’t say we won’t know how each other plays after this.  Each side has won twice so far this season, including wins in each other’s barn, so these four games should be equally as interesting and the perfect match up.  Obviously I am going to hope we win as it helps me keep my play-off beard that bit longer although to my Mam’s chagrin.  I’m naturally clean shaven but I somehow got talked into growing a play-off beard this year, here’s hoping it brings luck.

Enjoy your hockey wherever you watch it, and I’ll be back again soon.
