The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
When you’re smiling, when you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you. Yes for the first time in 2010, I can blog about a win for the Scims. Took long enough but hey, a win is a win and we got it in style too. Hopefully, this will be the start of a renaissance for us and we can start to climb that table again.
It’s certainly been an eventful few days in the land of the Scims, and it all began on Saturday when Romford were in town for the first part of the double header. I’d had the first part of my IT spreadsheet exam earlier in the day so I was quite relaxed before hockey. Exam part one went great before in case you wondered, this despite me worrying about it the days previous. Met Ian from work and made the journey together, squeezing somehow onto the tram which was rammed pack with people coming back from Hillsborough and the football.
The game itself was a classic smash and grab raid if you can call it that; not that the Romford Raiders fans will agree. Sure Darius Pilskauskas (is that how you spell it, because it’s a bit of a mouthful even with no food) was a real handful in attack but Romford were really indebted to the former Slough back up Charlie Kaylor who really stood on his head and denied us time and time again. The match stats say it all, 47 shots on him compared to 23 on Ben Bowns. That’s the real measure of the game.
We fielded an all Brit team because Pasi wasn’t fully fit to start, Peter Slamiar was still injured and Mark Stewart was out because of the match penalty he picked up in the previous game against the Phantoms. Yet the effort couldn’t be faulted as the kids scrapped and hustled but sadly didn’t get the reward they really deserved. The word in the bar was who was this “proven scorer” that our head coach’s programme notes was on about, certain names were being banded about but as of now – nobody has arrived to fill that void. I’m sure something will happen though before the deadline has come and gone.
You just knew though that the team would snap the rot sooner rather than later, and when we would it be we’d score a fair few too. That happened the following night in Essex as we completed the full house of away triumphs in Romford, but not before Pilskauskas had given the Raiders the lead. Seven unanswered goals gave us a lead that we would not relinquish and ensure a happy return for Mark Stewart against his old team. It certainly gives the lads a bit of positive thinking as we go to Manchester tonight (Thursday) for that rescheduled game and a reunion with the recently released Stephen Wallace who is now plying his trade with Tony Hand’s men.
It cheered me up as well, as that morning I’d seen my amateur football team play their first game in ten weeks and lose 4-1 after taking the lead. Another loss and I would have seriously been searching the medicine cabinet for the Valium, but a win it was for the Scims and we can all start to believe again. It wasn’t so good hockey wise for the Steelers though, as I received a text from my pal as she left the Arena just saying “that was bloody rubbish” after the Stingrays had won there for the first time ever. Perhaps she might be converted into the Scims way of thinking soon, not that I am pushing the issue.
This weekend is going to be a real toughie though. After Manchester away, surely we deserve a win against them now (they are the only team we haven’t beaten this season), we go to Basingstoke on Saturday night before entertaining Slough on the Sunday. We have to believe that anything is indeed possible and can come away with at least a win from one if not all the games. A positive mindset indeed and something that served us well earlier in the season. My Mam is coming on Sunday too, so that would be nice for her to see us win also. She missed out on the 50/50 last weekend by just two numbers, so at least that spared me some unwanted glances from people. She can collect it herself this week if she wins, don’t know which she’ll get to present it though – probably ask me for advice I guess.
Coventry isn’t long away, and I have decided now that I won’t do it this year even if we do get there. Last year was easy enough because I could give some other commitments a miss and go to the Sky Dome, this year is different as I don’t have the funds to afford it first of all and secondly I need the funds for my City break in Munich at the end of April/beginning of May. You can’t do everything you want unfortunately. Now if things change in the next few weeks, I could be saying something different.
I’ll close this by welcoming Ben Wilson to the Scims, a new defenceman who will definitely add a bit of size and presence to our back line (he weighs 275 lbs, big lad eh?). Let’s hope it is an inspired signing that takes us onwards and upwards. Oh, and Olympic hockey is less than 4 weeks away too. Time to find my Team Canada shirt out of the wardrobe methinks and place a bet on them to win gold again. Enjoy your hockey and I’ll be back again next week.
