The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
I was going to do a positive blog recent about what has happened to the Scims when we signed Pavel Gomenyuk from Hull Stingrays but recently things have gone a bit off beam and it’s a case of complete uncertainty as the Club changes completely. It’s got to the stage where it makes you wonder really if we will see Mr Gomenyuk actually ice for us. Not that he has reneged on his contract, no, but changes off ice have us all of a Scims persuasion slightly worried.
It all began the local newspaper ran a story that we were in financial doo doo. I knew we had a few money issues but putting my optimistic hat on again I didn’t believe the problems were so intense. Basically, I was thinking it was a quick attempt at filling a few column inches about hockey in the local rag – well you know how it is. It happens all the time in the media; trust me I have been told this from friends that work in the fourth estate. So as I said I didn’t believe it.
Then it comes to light on our official website, and my optimistic hat is replaced by a slightly more worried one. It’s amazing that even at our level, the running costs to keep a team alive are remarkably high and it doesn’t take a born genius to work that you need a fair bob to keep it a going concern season after season. Successful businessmen in their own right, Gary and Ian (who I have great thanks to add) realised we needed a fresh injection to ensure the Scims kept going. Now if I had won the lotto, I could be that man, but joking aside it’s a pretty serious situation. Hammer blow number one!
Hammer blow number two came a couple of weeks ago when I got a text saying that Jon Rowbotham had suddenly resigned as our coach and severed all ties with the Club I love so much. It was something I never envisaged as Jon is one of the best home grown coaches in this country alongside Peter Russell at Slough Jets. He’s a great bloke off the ice and having chewed the fat a few times with him over a pint of Guinness it was something of a shock definitely. Like most I was hoping it was something that could be turned around quickly and Jon would be still the main man.
However, there was no U-turn at all and Jon stuck to his guns and departed the scene. Reading the Press Release and his subsequent statement made me gulp. Some nameless idiots who think they know how to run a hockey team better had caused it and I could not help but echo in my head what Jon was saying. I really do hope that these alleged people can sleep easy at night, knowing fully well what damage they have caused the Club they so purposely claim to support. My slightly worried hat was now under a major black cloud as I contemplated what may be the next shock.
And it came last Saturday when before heading off to College to continue my studies, when another press release was on our official site. Gary and Ian had left too. Hammer blow number three! The release did however leave a glimmer of light though as there is a prospective new owner planned and it’s also someone who has links with the successful Academy set up. That’s intriguing to say the least, but it does sound positive. Like any Scims supporter I don’t want to see my team disappear, I want to see them in the EPL causing ripples of surprises and that’s not too much to ask is it? I want to see Gomenyuk in our team, and the youngsters showing that last season wasn’t a one off.
Dreams can come true; let us hope that for Sheffield Scimitars they do. It’ll be a complete travesty if it doesn’t. You hear what I’m saying? Just keep your collective fingers and toes, or whatever else you wanna cross, crossed and it will be as Denis Norden constantly reminded us: “…All right on the night!”
