Unhappy times for Scimdogs?

Unhappy times for Scimdogs?

Hello again, and as I write another blog, it’s still been a very unhappy New Year for the Scims.  Four games into the second part of the season and still not a win to show for our efforts.  OK, we got a point from the penalty shot loss against Milton Keynes Lightning but there’s nothing that beats an actual win and arrests an alarming dip in form.

So what did I wish for then this New Year, apart from hoping that the Scims win the end of season play offs in Coventry?  Well, basically all I wanted was for us to keep up the amazing start we have had prior to the New Year going.  Yet I just feel as if Lady Luck has gone on her holidays (Vancouver for the Olympics maybe?) and deserted us completely.  Have we over achieved so this season, some will say we have, but you don’t get where you are without sheer hard work and determination and that’s something we have shown a fair bit of so far.

Last weekend we faced Bracknell at Ice Sheffield and made our final regular season trip to Peterborough (fate ironically has decreed we face the same sides this weekend but in reverse obviously), and I really thought we could come away win at least a win from one of those games: if not both.  But it wasn’t to be as Saturday was a case of Groundhog Day against the Bees, and Sunday was just Sunday.

I’m not a bad loser really but last Saturday was just one of those matches that left a bitter taste in the mouth.  With the referee not having a great game, we succumbed to a Bees side playing “bitty and ugly” hockey – hockey that drives people away in my eyes.  Sure, hockey is a physical game but the hockey adopted by our opponents was at times – well over physical in some cases.  Yet the biggest surprise was that they were allowed at times to get away with whatever they liked as the referee had allegedly “lost the plot”, no match penalties to anyone – nothing.  Therefore the mini fracas that came with three seconds came too late to change the game’s momentum, they had “gooned” it up and succeeded in their game plan.  Many others felt the same I can tell you.

Following night it was Peterborough who are now a tough nut to crack now they have added MacIver to their ranks, finally they have developed a style that wins them games and good luck to Doug Irwin – took time but you got there.  We levelled twice (one for the birthday boy Tom Squires as I had predicted on his Facebook page a few hours before face-off) but this time the Phantoms wouldn’t let us have it our way and went onto record a win against us finally…at attempt number four mind you!

The talk then concentrated on what we could do to arrest the slide, someone even suggested bringing back Kyle Schutte as an enforcer type “goon” to add a bit of physical presence to the side.  Let me be clear, this got a very unfavourable response back.  No disrespect to Kyle but he would be a liability to the side and wouldn’t help matters one iota.  We need a MacIver type player that does have physical attributes but can benefit the side in offensive sense too.  That’s why the Phantoms are doing alright now.  Whether we can find a suitable import to do that begs to be found out.

We also dispensed with the services of British forward Stephen Wallace on Tuesday, and to me I find it strange.  OK, Stephen is one of those enigma players that can blow either hot or cold with equal frustration but he really is a good EPL hockey player.  Added to the fact, I used to always have a good chat about our native North East with him post match.  North East lads sticking together you know.  But the decision to release him is staggering.  Some are happy he’s gone because of the enigma factor I’ve mentioned, but there’s some who are displeased too (me and my mate Ian to name just two).  Hope you find a new club soon mate, and knowing you you’ll come back and haunt us.  That’s the problem, he probably will.

I’ll close this blog by wishing the Sheffield Steelers all the best in their Continental Cup Finals this weekend.  Steelers might be underdogs to win it but the underdog always has a chance, just do British hockey proud and to those who hope they fail: well I think you should be ashamed of yourselves.  The first time a British side has got this far and you want them to lose: get a grip on reality for God’s sake.

See you next week, and hopefully I will be in a better mood and can start talking about winning hockey games again.  Nothing wrong with a bit of optimism is there?  Enjoy your hockey folks….
