When is a crisis not a crisis?

When is a crisis not a crisis?

That’s what I want to know the answer to please.  2010 hasn’t been kind so far for us but as my Mam keeps reminding me: “It’s not for want of trying at all.” – well she’s right in that sense.  We have a brilliant start to the season, and come the new year then it’s all gone a bit Pete Tong to be honest.  Yet the effort the lads put in doesn’t warrant the results they are getting.

So therefore you can assume it was just one of those weekends again, a pointless one which deserved much more.  Sunday being a case in point actually, where we played some exceptional hockey but lost to another late, late winner.  Déjà vu perhaps? Yeah maybe, but I am now convinced that two things have caused this dip in form.  Firstly Lady Luck is definitely on holiday in Vancouver for the Winter Olympics and secondly, someone associated with our side must have run over a black cat before Christmas.  There’s no other explanation for it.

Our new signing certainly has got a few tongues wagging and also a few players backs up too.  I mean the first time I saw Ben was pre-match Sunday, and when they say he is a big lad well he most certainly is.  Looking at him you’d think he’d be more akin to playing in the front row for Saracens or Sheffield Eagles, but he’s been brought into the team to do a job and who can argue with that really.  Or him for that matter as well.  Nicky Chinn quickly didn’t want to know when Ben gave him some banter at Basingstoke, and Sunday was Ryan Watt’s turn.

Watt had been “giving it some” like he does, not exactly the most popular person in hockey – well just ask Geoff Woolhouse.  Geoff lost his job at Swindon because he stood up to him, and it makes you wonder how much Peter Russell can take with these silly antics Watt persists on doing.  He’s a not bad hockey player when he puts his mind to it is Ryan but sometimes he crosses the line into stupidity.  Mind you, when Watt saw Ben enter the ice and challenge him to drop the gloves and show how hard he really was – Watt quickly turned 180 degrees and skated quickly back to his bench.  Some wags near me said they had never seen him move so quickly.

He got his own back though by scoring the game winner past Pasi though.  Yet it would have been overtime if Gregg Rockman had positioned himself where he did when that last second shot on the Jets goal headed goalbound.  We deserved a point for the effort, Matt Haywood’s 23rd of a very productive season for the Under 20 gold medallist coming at a time when Hilary (Paul Jones’ Mam said “Come on lads, put it in the net.” Jasik having given the Jets an early lead.

Saturday in Basingstoke had been in the words of one of my friends: “Utter crap” as we didn’t really show our full potential.  The main difference was the Bison’s Slovakian sharp shooter Ondrej Lauko who bagged 4 of the home side’s 5 goals.  Must think of a plan to stop him doing something similar when the Bison are back at Ice Sheffield at the end of the month.  Don’t what but I’ll have to think of something then pass it onto our coach, not that he is going to listen…

With just two months to go before the end of another season, I am rapidly chewing myself to think of things to do and go to whilst there is no hockey.  I have experimented with a number of sports but to be realistic, nothing has captured my imagination as much as hockey does.  I am rapidly running out of ideas to be honest.  Can anyone help?

I was going to attend the Steelers and Panthers Challenge Cup tie last night but couldn’t get thanks to the snow.  Yes, I know it stopped early but I was like waiting for ages for a bus to turn up and get me to the Arena.  Eventually at quarter to seven, I gave it up as a lost cause and trudged off back to my house.  Ten minutes later, a bloody bus passed my front window.  Typical bad luck.  So I consoled myself in watching Leeds United – Tottenham on the TV in the FA Cup.  Not the same intensity as a Steelers – Panthers game but I quite enjoyed it actually.  Made a change I suppose.

Ah well, Saturday’s the day.  The day I am due to get my exam result, and the same for my class mate…Sean McMorrow!  If you read my previous blog then you’ll know what I am about, if you haven’t check it out.  Hopefully I will have passed it with flying colours so to speak and I can move onto my next module…e-presentations!   Then later it’s time for the Muppet Show at Ice Sheffield (a visit from the now Irwin-less Phantoms) and perhaps Ben might get a little dance with Mr Morgan and/or Mr MacIver?  Whets the old appetite it does before we go to Bracknell (about time we beat them again) on Sunday.  Good chances in both games if we play like we did against the Jets I’d say.

Enjoy your hockey, and as usual I’ll be back again next week for more…
