Belfast Giants vs Edinburgh Capitals 14.3.10
Well if a match could have a title I would give this one 'And you said he was too old to play hockey' It was great to see George Awada back on form and shutting up his critics, you know who you are, and you should recognise everything that George has done for the franchise. I was on my own for the first ten minutes of the match, looking for my husband every two minutes to see if he had arrived after work and there was quite a bit of activity with a hooking call on Michael Jacobsen and a goal from Szwez, assisted by Shields and Bateman all before the ten had passed.
A hooking penalty by Neil Hay allowed the Giants to again take advantage of an opening and Szwez assisted by Bateman and Chevy scored in the thirteenth minute. The first ended on a two nil score and things were looking good, I grabbed a pint and relaxed it was looking as if there was going to be a Belfast win tonight! The second period had six penalties including a roughing penalty to the promoted hard man Szwez. Can I also take this opportunity to say that I am 100% behind Sean McMorrow, I am not going to comment on the specifics of his situation but I am hoping to see him back in Belfast where he belongs sooner rather than later.
McKenzie's holding the stick penalty gave George Awada an opening assisted by Tommy Walsh and Evan Cheverie, this was particularly sweet as for ten minutes prior to face off all I could hear was disparaging comments about the best defender in the league. There were comments about Tommy not scoring and hanging back-he is a stay at home defence man, he puts up points, he has accumulated the highest amount of points in his career here in Belfast and he doesn't give away silly goals by trying to be a forward, he hangs back to DEFEND which is what he is paid to do, he he high quality and we are lucky to have him.
Peaks scored three minutes later assisted by the awesome Evan Cheverie and that tied up the score at four to nil. The second finished as an underline to the match with Murph again shutting out the Caps, breaking his own franchise and league record for eight shut outs. Deservedly Szwez was named Man of the Match for Belfast and Rudkowsky was MOTM for the Caps, even though he was pulled to rest him for an incredibly testing few matches against the Chavs and Panthers, Come on Caps do the Giants a favour.
