Belfast Giants v' Cardiff Devils 12.3.10

Well after a gruelling week at work, nine hour shifts Monday to Friday and literally making it to the Odyssey with minutes to spare before face off I really needed a good hard hitting, entertaining hockey match, and for that wish I was not disappointed. With Coventry sitting precariously at the top of the league with only Belfast and Nottingham looking likely to steam ahead and claim the league title, it was a must win against Cardiff.

Cardiff were always a team that it was difficult to call a win, and with Belfast minus Sean McMorrow and Pierre Luc Faubert there was always the danger that the match could go either way. The last time we faced the Devils at home Benny sustained the worst injury that I have ever first handedly witnessed so a bit of the warmth that I felt towards the devils had definitely waned since then.

From start to finish it was an exceptionally defensive match, the most ridiculous call of the night happening after one and a half minutes with Tom Walsh receiving a two minute for illegal equipment after having his helmet knocked off and he was called as he skated towards the bench, well done Hanson, another impeccable night from you! Neither sides wanting to relinquish a goal early in the first, then up stepped Szwez at the four minute mark to place the pressure on the Devils. Szwez netted a powerplay goal and the feeling was fantastic, the league title was still in sight! The period ended and I needed to stretch my legs, and I shan't name names, but I was accosted by a well known fan, who left me feeling a bit, well lets just say that I was confused, if someone is going to come up to me at a match at least open your mouth and say something!

The second period was very defensive and although there were some good shots on Lyle and Murph neither goalie conceded any goals in the second. With the dying minutes of the third Szwez netted a second goal scuppering any thoughts of pulling Lyle for an extra forward on the ice, the announcement that Murph had broken a franchise record of seven shut outs was the cherry on the cake and gave fresh hope that something awesome could result from Mother's days rescheduled match against Edinburgh...
