Edinburgh are no longer fluffy

Blog from Door 19

Saturday's Caps match will go down in my memory as the day that the 'fluffy', friendly Edinburgh team were no more, the day that I had an incredibly sore arm and five 6 foot bananas danced their way onto the 'best seats in the house.' My day started like any other Saturday, a lie in; well nine o clock gives me an extra two and a half hours in bed. I had my usual chai latte in Nero's and then headed to Holywood for my tattoo appointment at three. My god it hurt, but it was so worth it, really nice job done, I highly recommend Alternative Ink and the singing tattoo artist Shane Sunday. Pulling on my pink MacMillan jersey I braved the rain and went for a well deserved pint in Rockie's Sports Bar.

There were loads of Caps fans in the bar proudly showing off their knees in there kilts, as always it was a pleasure to host the Caps and their fans at the Odyssey, well that's what I thought until they started playing dirty. It was nice to be able to relax and contemplate how the Giants would perform against the Caps with their new coach Brad Gratton and some very impressive new signings. Waiting for our friends to arrive (who are always late) we decided to head into the arena and see if our jerseys were in yet. They weren't but I had plenty of back up shirts to do me until my new one arrived, shirt off the back tickets and another pint in hand we made our way to door 19 and our new season ticket seats. I was looking forward to seeing Alex Kim in action and Chris St Jacques in action, my prediction of a Giant's whitewash to a Giant's win but with a slightly lower score.

Christiansen surprised me right off the bat by putting Craze in goal, I agree totally with this decision, it's important to keep both goalies game ready if god forbid something happened to Smurph. The first period was equally played, both teams were as strong as each other and kept it scoreless, the second was where the Caps started really playing dirty the mood of the Odyssey was audibly dropped when Hay tripped Benedict and he had to be supported off the ice, he'll be in plaster for six weeks at least, a dirty hit from a not so great player. To be honest I was hoping that Benedict would be chosen for the Belfast Giant's select side but he won't be facing the Bruins, an honour he really did deserve, thanks Neil Hay!! As a side note on the Bruins match, the team put together by the Belfast Giants select coaches has been really well done, with one big exception; is it just me or is the inclusion of Cory 'Bridget' Neilson inexplicable? There are so many other sensible choices; Dave Clarke 5, Joey Talbot, Jeff Legue, Jon Pelle, but a past it wind up merchant who keeps putting his foot in his mouth is a better choice? I think this personally is a cop out and he shouldn't be on the squad, a favour called in from an old friend perhaps? The Belfast Giants select team was waved off as an Elite League all star team, more like a Belfast, Coventry, Sheffield, Cardiff, Nottingham all star team, is this fair that there isn't a fair representation of all the teams in the Elite? As a final note for this, I shall be there supporting the Giants select but if Neilson winds up one of the Bruins I will laugh and cheer them if Chara takes a swing at him.

Anyway... The second period was more productive as the Giants killed a elbowing penalty and Hemmingway put one past Scott Reid, it was made two nil when Garside lifted the puck over Reid's hand and extended the Giant's lead. Life was good, I was sitting in awesome seats with my favourite person in the world beside me, with a beer and the Giants were two nil up going into the third, I was just constantly aware that my arm was aching and there was blood seeping through my jersey, but hey no pain no gain and I was just happy to be there.

Brett Hemmingway put the puck away at the start of the third cementing the Giants win, it was looking as if Craze was going to have a shut out until Adam Taylor pulled one back for the Caps. There were a lot of big hits with Craig Peacock having a bit of argy bargy with Martin Cingel, then came out Mike Hoffman, and what can I say? What a great purchase, well done Dougie. He was written off by the Blaze commentator last week and how ironic that he put in a man of the match performance. Scoring two goals against Reid and sending the crowd wild, he truly is a Giant, an all rounder a multi dimensional hard man, the sort of player the Giants have been waiting for since Schulte retired; a big man who can put the points up and protect his team. The good feeling was palpable and there was excitement in the air when it was realised that the next time we'll be in the Odyssey it'll be to see the mighty Bruins.
