Belfast Giants vs. Dundee Stars 13th Nov 2010
After an impromptu Christmas shopping trip into Bangor and Belfast I couldn’t wait to get away from the hustle and bustle of the panic buyers so I headed to Rockies for a few pre match drinks with my husband and our friends Matt and Kim. I was hopeful that Saturday would hail the return of my beloved Jeff Mason and I wasn’t to be disappointed. In fact Saturday was to be one of the most surprising and unexpected matches that I have ever witnessed. Sure it was looking a bit sketchy with the absence of Sean McMorrow and Mike Hoffman, and players like Makway looking to step into the Sherriff’s shoes. The Giants were looking vulnerable, seemingly at the mercy of (and I echo my earlier sentiments) a team who were trying to emulate the goonish behaviour of the 2008-09 Newcastle Vipers.
It was a tough game from start to finish and a great Saturday night out - well worth your £15 with ten goals and three fights, which was frankly better than the £14.95 pay per view “fight” between Haye and Harrison that only lasted 7 minutes. It was great to see Michael Jacobsen back in a Giants jersey, he played fantastically well over the entire weekend and it was great to see Mason back and Garside back, for a period at least. Dundee were very good defensively keeping the Giants at bay for ten minutes before Shieldsy found his target and netted a goal with an assist from Jacobsen. It was looking as if it wasn’t going to be as much of a struggle as the previous Dundee match had been with the Giants having to defeat them in a shoot out.
It was an angry match from the outset with both teams hacking at each other and as usual Darnell out did himself with some particularly terrible decisions. Danny Welch took a seat in the penalty box for high sticking at 10.39 and it was looking as if Dundee could take the man advantage, Brad Smyth had other ideas setting Jeff Mason up for his first goal of the match. I was on my feet and cheering proud to be wearing his name and number. The cheers didn’t last for long as Ceman put Dundee on the score sheet whilst still on the power play. The Giants were getting tired of being pushed around and Ross Dalgleish vented his anger gaining a two minute roughing penalty shortly after. The period ended and there was a great deal of tension between both sides, it was sure to be a hell of a second period.
Makway was still in the penalty box as the second period began with a delay of game minor penalty. Jacobsen took advantage of this and assisted Danny Welch to put the Giants 3-1. Garside had taken a bad hit halfway through the first and hadn’t returned with the rest of the squad. Brett Hemingway netted a goal set up by Gleed to increase the Giants lead. Almost 7 minutes into the second period Makway slashed Shields. He had pushed the Captain too far and one of the most unlikely fights ensued with Shields owning Makway and winning the fight (assist to Coops for a quality photo of it for the website!). As if that wasn’t unexpected enough Peacock proceeded to fight with Harper following a cross check less than a minute later. The two mild mannered players each behaving out of character and showing that they can’t be pushed around while Hoffman was absent. Nebus was desperate to keep winding Dalgleish up and earned another two minute roughing minor penalty.
The period ended and I went to get my 50/50 and shirt off the back tickets. At the first period interval I had my shirt signed by Benny, Colin Hemingway and Rich Seeley, it looked as if the only way I’ll be getting my shirt signed this season was if players were injured as the Fanzone had failed to put on any meet and greet events (even if it was promised to Season ticket holders that there would be said events…). Getting back to my seat I prepared for another eventful period of play.
Mason didn’t wait long to score once again for the Giants, six minutes into the third assisted by Shields and Dalgleish. Dundee were looking as if they had no chance to score again Hughes gaining a two minute slashing penalty, Harper got an unassisted short handed goal to save some face. Fifteen minutes into the third Tristan Harper was fighting yet again with another usually mild-mannered Giant this time in the form of Brett Hemingway. Kudrna was pulled and the Stars had a ‘man advantage’ once again the panic tactic of pulling the goalie proved futile as Prudden netted a sixth goal for the Giants, instinctively knowing where the goal was and tucking the puck home effortlessly. Wishart got another back at the death to give a more respectable score to his side with the game ending 6-4 and giving the Giants some confidence going into Sunday’s match against the Clan in their first visit to the Odyssey.
Belfast Giants vs. Braehead Clan 14th Nov 2010
I had my Gingerbread latte from Starbucks and I was feeling suitably festive and ready to witness the first Braehead match at the big ‘O’ after the antics of the previous night. I grabbed a match pint and headed for the bridge to see the Giants warm up and to get a glimpse of Richardson’s Clan.
Brad Smyth opened the scoring in a much more sedate match after six minutes. Through the match reports of the Clan versus the various other teams in the Elite I knew to look out for Dominic Noel who one timed the puck past Murph and tied the scores at 1 each after eleven minutes.
Smyth again scored for the Giants 38 minutes into the match edging the home side ahead of the shiny new Clan. There were equal defensive and offensive units neither side scoring until Brendan Cook edged the puck past Murph in a breakaway three minutes into the third period. The Clan fans were making a lot of noise and although they were severely outnumbered they still made their support known and really did themselves proud. The Giants had to kill back to back penalties for Gleed to retain a lead against the Clan and Hemingway managed to get the game winner 57 minutes into the match.
Once again the panic tactics kicked in and Richardson pulled Perras, leaving Mason to finish off a fantastic returning weekend by hitting the puck over 100ft to give an end result of 4-2 and a win in the League and the Challenge Cup. A four point weekend was awesome and a great result for Christiansen’s side. Although I did have to smile at the Stingrays beating Coventry 5-1. (Pity it wasn’t a league match…) Also best of luck to Hull’s Kriss Grundmanis who has been released from the Stingrays, he went out on a high with a Gordie Howe of his own - hope to see him again soon.
