Interview from Door 19

Whenever the Cardiff Devils came to town last season everybody groaned! It was always a tough battle, a battle that the Devils rarely lost, the main reason for this was their super-star Jon Pelle. When he signed for the Giants there were huge expectations, fanfares and dramatic videos. Doug Christiansen had pulled off a major coup, the player that had the Elite League record for points scoring; 55 goals and 56 assists in 62 games, and he would be suited up and playing for the Giants this season rather than against them. The 25 year old from West Islip New York helped his team to go on a record breaking winning streak last season and all eyes were firmly on him.

During the Giant's meet and greet it was refreshing to see that there was no huge ego or airs and graces, he was very humble and excited to talk to and connect with the fans. Pelle, in the first period of the preseason 'Hockey Fest' picked up an injury and has been out for the start of the season and I just look forward to his recovery and to see him back on the ice at the 'O'. Jon took a few minutes to answer some in depth questions so the fans can get to see the 'real Jon Pelle'.

SM: So Jon, what are your first impressions of Belfast?

JP: Well my first impressions of Belfast city so far is that it seems like a lot of fun, the people have all been really friendly, there are plenty of bars and restaurants and lots to do.

SM: You received a heroes welcome to the Giants, do you feel that you're under pressure to perform like you did for the Devils?

JP: I feel a little bit of pressure, but I understand that is just part of the job. I don't expect to have 110 points again this year. That's not my goal, my goal is to work hard and help give this team the best chance to win every night.

SM: Tell us about your team mates, your first impressions, expectations?

JP: My team mates are great! We've got tons of different characters and personalities. Every guy brings something unique to the locker room and to the ice. I'm looking forward to getting to know them better.

SM: As an outsider last season playing for the Devils what were your impressions of the Giant's organisation, coaches and players?

JP: I always enjoyed coming to play in Belfast and once the season ended with Cardiff I thought I might like to play here. I knew Doug would recruit a great team and I know how much he wants to win- all big reasons why I wanted to come here.

SM: The Elite League is the top in the UK but what made you move here to play in the UK?

JP: I initially came to the UK for the M.B.A. I really enjoyed Cardiff and wanted to try another city. Belfast looks good so far!

SM: Which other Elite League team and players impresses you this season?

JP: I'm not sure what to expect this upcoming season. Dundee has a good goaltender in Chris Whitley, so I expect them to be stronger. other than that, I expect the usual suspects to be at the top of the table.

SM: What do you miss most about Long Island?

JP: I'd say I miss my family the most. And my dog. And of course my friends. The beaches are beautiful, but I'm normally home to enjoy them in the summer.

SM: As a professional hockey player do you have any superstitions or rituals that you do before a match?

JP: To be honest I'm not a very superstitious guy, so no. I have a routine, but its not too strict. If something gets in the way, I'm not too bothered by it.

SM: Who has been the biggest influence and inspiration to you?

JP: My father has been the biggest inspiration to me. he's an honest, hard working guy who's been a huge influence on me.

SM: Who is your favourite NHL team (stupid question) and player of all time?

JP: The Islanders are my favourite team and Pat Lafontaine all time favourite player of all time.

SM: Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

JP: Well I'll have completed my M.B.A. and in 5 years i see myself in Boston or back home in New York, working.

SM: What has been your proudest moment?
JP: So far my proudest moment was winning the C.H.L. championship with the Rapid City Rush.
