Is Corey lucky?

Is Corey lucky?

Well... it's once again the off season and I'm trying to get over the slightly nauseating fact that Corey 'I'm the luckiest man alive, and I've just saved my job by the skin of my teeth' Neilson has two of the three trophies. The Panthers were decidedly average all season, and have somehow managed to get their grubby mitts on the Playoff trophy. I’ll echo what most are saying and attribute the change in form to the appointment of Rick Strachan when Corey was up the proverbial creek. I'll answer the comments before they're posted a) I'm not bitter per se; yeah I believe that this is the best Giants side collectively that has iced in the Odyssey, and I think it's awful that they walked away empty handed. To be honest, if the Steelers had won everything or if the Devils had shared in the accolades I would be less annoyed at this years results.

Needless to say as a Giants fan I am gutted for the team that they didn't get what they deserved but I'm hopeful that Christiansen can win something next season. The rumours floating around post playoffs are awful to say the least.

1) The departure of Colin Shields to France. I have heard many disparaging comments about Shieldsey. Just because he didn't match or better his points total of last season (34 goals + 53 assists for 87 points compared to 2010/2011 with 18 goals and 49 assists for 67 points). He has done so much for the team and the organisation, the team had gelled quickly this season and the captain of the team should be given praise for that. It would be a great loss to the Giant's organisation to lose Shieldsey.

2) Another rumour being bandied around is Josh Prudden to the Coventry Blaze. To me, it doesn't make sense to join a team that was over rated and got nowhere in the league, and not signing for the team that almost won the treble. Perhaps a step in the wrong direction one might say. His departure is a big loss to the Giants, he amassed 72 points (26+46) from 57 games, and from what I saw of him at the practice session and the meet and greets he seemed like a stand up kind of guy, a real team player and it would be a shame to see him and Owen Fussey languishing in mid table next season.

The playoff qualifier at the Odyssey was a shining testament to the incompetence of the on ice officials. Hicks lost control of the match, both sides took advantage of the lack of consequences to their actions and it was chaos. Jaeger was even getting in on the non called penalties, holding Peaks as he was screening him. Garside was nearly broken in half as two Blaze players boarded him in the corner of the rink, and didn‘t return. The Blaze who I’ve mentioned many times as being decidedly average all season were satisfied with a draw in the Odyssey. Lets face it, if the reffing had been up to scratch then the Giants would have steam rollered them and Robert Farmer would have spent most of the game in the penalty box.

Before the comments come rolling in; leave the refs alone, blah blah, the refs are okay, blah blah - there were 6,500+ people at the Odyssey that night and anyone who knew the rules and cared about the result of the match were extremely vocal about the serious malpractice of the officials: “CALL SOMETHING, HICKS“, etc. Come back, Mr. Hanson, all is forgiven. As well, the guy (that one guy in the crowd of 6,500+ people) who stood up and shouted ‘Christiansen go back to Edinburgh’ - get a life! Think about what he has done to and for the team, he is a fantastic coach and we could do worse- at least we don’t have Neilson (pre-Strachan). We may actually win something next season, whereas if Neilson stays at the Panthers they won’t win the league for the 57th year in a row. The Giants have a chance to draw a line under this season and to gain experience. Hopefully the majority of our players stay for 2011/2012 season. Well done Ben Simon and his Steelers for winning the league, a truly deserved result. BGFL
