The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.

I was assuming that the Devil’s match was going to be quite sedate and a far cry from last year’s cat and mouse games between Sean McMorrow and Brad Voth. Hoffman was presumably happy to have regular ice time and to be able to prove his worth as a viable hockey player not having to take lumps out of the other teams. Hoff however had to step in several times in order to make his presence known. The announcement on Thursday of the signing of ex-NHLer Brad Smyth to pad out the Giants roster with the absence of Benny and Mason was exciting to say the least and big things were expected. Smyth did deliver but truly Saturday evening was the Hemingway show; Brett making sure that his output was recognised and that he shouldn’t be underestimated.
As usual the low quality of the refereeing almost spoiled the game, Smith making some very questionable calls. Hoffman was sent to the penalty box three times in the first twelve minutes of the game. The first period was evenly matched, both defensive and forward units playing to the same standard and making it difficult for either team to score. The Devils fans were making a lot of noise and cheering their team on well, any atmosphere surrounding the Giants fans died when Finnerty and Hill set up Kenton Smith for the first goal of the evening and the Devils took the lead with seven minutes remaining in the first. Mark Smith and Stuart MacRae with minor penalties gave the Giants a five on three power play advantage that Brett Hemmingway took full advantage of this with a goal set up by Colin Shields and Tim Cook. The crowd were on their feet but it was apparent that it would not be an easy win for the Giants. It was going to be hard work and the Giants had to win on Saturday and then again on Sunday against the Steelers to make it difficult for the Steelers to take pole position in the Elite League table.
The first period ended with the score drawn, the big hits from Finnerty and the poking and prodding at Seeley and Hoffman to provoke a reaction were unanswered. Christiansen clearly wanted the points and needed all his players to concentrate on putting the puck in the net rather than scrapping and risking injury or getting tossed from the game. The second period started as the first had, scoreless with both teams playing equally until an interference call against Colin Hemmingway handed the Devils a power play opportunity, Mark Richardson taking full advantage of this and putting the puck past Murph. The Giants waited less than half a minute to answer this with Josh Prudden smashing the puck past Lyle with an assist to Jon Gleed. It was frustrating to say the least, each opposition goal being answered with no sign of a credible lead being taken. The second period ended with the score once again tied, it looked as if one team may have edged a win or the game might have gone into over time. That was until the Giants came out fired up and ready to get down to business in the third period.
The third began with both sides putting pressure on the respective goal tenders, the Giants were looking for an opening to take control of the game and a two minute penalty called against Tyler Michel gave Colin Hemmingway and Colin Shields the perfect opportunity to set Brett up with his second goal of the game. A massive hug was waiting for Brett from his brother in celebration - it was a turning point and the Giants began out playing the Devils when it counted the most. Five minutes later with three minutes left on the clock new comer Brad Smyth netted a goal, set up by Josh Prudden lengthening the lead by two goals. The clock running down and four seconds left on the clock the style and class of the new recruit came into play. Smyth faking a slap shot at Lyle, he flicked the puck backwards to a waiting Colin Hemmingway who had no problem in cementing the final score at five to two. The Giants made sure that they let the league know that they were top of the league and that they had every intention in staying there. I fully enjoyed the match, it was a great atmosphere and the celtic video coupled with the Dropkick Murphys playing the boys onto the ice really got things going. Big Sean returns to the Odyssey on Thursday, he’ll be wanting to do what he does best - fighting, but Dougie has already ruled that out so it’ll be interesting to see what happens there. Also, a big shout out to Christopher Pendleton thanks for the encouragement and support on Saturday.
