Not so Cool FM!

Blog from Door 8

Well this morning I was listening to Cool FM and shock horror Todd Kelman was on air talking to that annoying eejit Connor Phillips. I have never made a secret of the fact that as a sponsor Cool FM have totally under preformed and have basically milked the hockey 'cash cow' by sending their scabby cat onto the ice to get money for their Cash For Kids charity. I felt though that Kelman, as polite as he is was incredibly insulted by the insinuation that hockey is, and I quote, "unsuitable as a family sport 'cause of the fighting and it's better than sitting at home watching the T.V. cause there's nothing on at the moment." COME BACK CITYBEAT!

Anyway....I earned a good night tonight, working in a city centre store totally zaps your spirit and happiness, especially ridiculous requests from customers that make me re evaluate my life. Having a beer in Rockies I felt myself unwind and begin to enjoy my night off, I headed into the 'O' purchasing my shirt off the back and 50/50 tickets I signed up for the Air Lingus flight give away and made my way to the bridge. My new favourite place to watch the pre match skate, you get a great view of the warm ups and the scramble at the goal. Reading my Top Shelf from Sunday I was excited, you can never predict the score of a Steeler's match but it was definitely going to be a good one! The warm up promised an angry match, lets just say words were exchanged between Sean McMorrow and the majority of the Steelers squad, I had to laugh it was shaping up to be a good match and the zamboni hadn't even been out yet!

Then I, well I had that terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach, Moray Hanson was reffing tonight and that's never a good omen! The first period incredibly defensive with neither side scoring until the dying seconds when Chevy flicked in a blue line shot set up by Shields past Verner. Verner I believed played fantastically picking pucks out of seemingly nowhere and making the Steelers look impenetrable, but the combination of Shields and Cheverie are rarely denied access to the opposition's net.

So the period ended 1-0 and the crowd were sedate and happy in the knowledge that we were up leaving the period. Then the unthinkable happened, the Subway cannon was pointed towards us and like a bullet from a delicatessen's gun a foot long sub nearly knocked the woman in front of us out and landed in my husband's lap. Needless to say it was very tasty :)

I uttered those famous last words as the Giants skated back onto the ice "Hanson hasn't had a bad game so far." I didn't have to wait long to regret those words, at 21:37 Chevy was tripped by Bolibruk and the whistle blew. I thought that it was a good call for Hanson, but then the Giant's penalty box door opened. I was confused! Chevy took a seat looking as confused as I was and I clocked the ref's hand signal for holding. That was dodgier than a nine quid note! The only thing Chevy was holding was his own weight sitting in the ice from being tripped. And, you've guessed it the Steelers capitalised on the man advantage in the last seconds of Chevy's penalty with Bolibruk putting one past Murph. Once again the opposition team were handed a gift wrapped goal courtesy of the head official, and may I say, note the sarcasm, "thanks for that!" Quite rightly Cheverie had a word when he left the box, and to be honest I'd have quite a few choice words for that ref.

There was a lot of fancy footwork from Thornton and he took the puck, the length of the ice. Cook was ready for him and with a nice high shot he slotted the puck over Verner's blocker and sealed the period up at 2-1 to the Giants. Full up from my Subway sandwich I went for a little walk bumping into Paddy and Davy along the way I bought some more tickets, alright I admit it I wanted that Benedict jersey badly! Returning to my seat I settled down for another period of good solid hockey. Benedict was all over the puck in the third making life difficult for the Steeler's defence trying to score, his effort was rewarded at 48 minutes when he scored on the powerplay with an assist from Shieldsy.

Benedict returned the favour assisting Shields ten minutes later to put the Giants at 4-1. And then, there was a slight altercation, Robert Farmer picking up a 2+2+10 for attempted spearing. Benedict had been hit hard by Farmer, slashed him and then the young Steeler tried to spear him. Needless to say Benny sat down for two minutes but he had already done his fair share of work for the Giant's victory. There was a resounding call for "bring on McMorrow" after a lengthy, ahem....conversation between him and the majority of the Steelers bench. But nobody would go toe to toe with him, it was out and out hockey until the end with a last ditch attempt for a goal from Jeff Legue tying the game up at 4-2.

All in all it was a great match and the atmosphere was great, lets hope we'll see a bit of action from Voth on Saturday, possibly not as the Sheriff has all the 'hard men' of the league paling in comparison.
