On Saturday the Giants face the determined force that is the Edinburgh Capitals. Although they are in the bottom three of the league, with their games in hand they could claw their way into a respectable position with straight wins by the end of the season. With seven games in hand over Nottingham they could conceivably finish the season in the top end of the league table. Christiansen on the long term injured list, becoming a bench coach rather than a player/ coach is starting to produce some good results. Their clash with the Panthers on 9.1.2010 came down to the wire with the Panthers only beating them in overtime, gaining a point and showing that there are no easy matches this year, and there are no predictable score lines.

The All Star line ups were revealed this week and the Capitals were denied any players in the starting six or netminders for the Overseas and British All Star squads, this is slightly insulting to the wealth of talent on offer from the Capitals. The three top points scorers Simon Lambert, with 39 points (17+22) Owen Fussey, with 36 points (20+16) and Jeff Hutchins, with 32 points (14+18) with this calibre of players in the Edinburgh team it's only a matter of time before they surge up the league to finish in a respectable position.

Hutchins, has played for a plethora of teams in the EIHL; Belfast, Newcastle, Coventry, Sheffield and now Edinburgh, he is showing exactly why he has been a main stay in the Elite league for so long. Racking up an impressive number of points he has proved that it's worth signing up players like him in the future. Released from the Steelers this season he was quickly snapped up by the Steelers organisation, one of the best purchases they have made this season. Hutchins is also the Edinburgh leading penalty minutes accumulator with 66 so far this season for the Capitals.

Lambert always makes an impression when he comes to Belfast, he is notoriously quick and lethal on the puck, blink and you miss him, blink and he scores. He is the lead point scorer and that makes him dangerous to have on the ice, previously playing for the Oklahoma City Blazers and a short stint in the ECHL playing for the Victoria Salmon Kings, this year playing for this side is 2008-2009 Belfast star Michael Burgoyne.

Fussey, originally from Winnipeg with his impressive resume playing alongside ex Giant Malcolm MacMillan in the 2007-2008 season for the AHL side Hershey Bears and also racking up an impressive number of AHL matches for, Portland Pirates, and the Toronto Marlies. Also playing four matches for the Washington Capitals, a wealth of talent on one man's shoulders. He also spent four seasons playing for the Calgary Hitmen between 1999 and 2003.

Andrew Sharp, the second leading penalty minutes accumulator and unofficial enforcer of the Capitals is always up for a tussle with Sean McMorrow who is leading the way with 243 penalty minutes. Sharp, who previously iced for the Sheffield Steelers led the way in penalty minutes in 2008-2009 season with 230, seems like the sheriff is keeping everybody quiet these days.

The native Scottish members of the squad Neil Hay, Kyle Horne and Jordan Steele are making their presence known on the ice. Hay who has iced for the Capitals, originally in the BNL, since the 2000-1 season has certainly been throwing his weight around and proving his value as a British Forward in the EIHL. Steele, also born in Edinburgh, has iced for the Caps for the past three seasons and although he is young he is one to watch for the future. Horne, a journey man, who began his professional career in the BNL playing for the Fife Flyers in 1996, progressing to the Slough Jets in the EPL, where he iced with fellow Capital Scott Mackenzie.

With all to play for in the closing months of the league both teams will be hungry for a win. A win for the Giants to secure the league 2009/2010 win, the Capitals to prove that they are worthy of a higher position in the league.

Enjoy the match!
