The Szwez show

I was annoyed to say the least that once again I was closing in work on a hockey night, so I got everything done and dusted and prepared to run over to the Odyssey so I would miss the minimum of the first period, then a hallelujah moment occurred, my phone beeped and a message came through 'Face off delayed until twenty past seven! You're in luck!' So I could relax a wee bit, I got to the packed out arena and settled into my seat, I met two of the nicest Giants fans on St Patrick's day and they were sitting behind us keeping us up to date with the score of the Caps versus the Blaze.

We were still chasing the league title and the whole arena were counting on the Caps to do us a favour, there was a lot of pressure on the Giants, they deserved a win and they played like champions on Saturday night not scraping a win like the so called 'league champions' lets see them do it next year without Calder! Jeffrey Szwez, one of the best purchases of the season opened the scoring at around six minutes assisted by Shieldsy and Bateman. Szwez scored again putting the score as two nil going into the period break, however this was bitter sweet as we had found out that the Blaze had beaten the Caps in over time and finished the season a day early, again scraping an overtime win and sneaking a title.

In the period break I went to get my shirt off the back ticket, desperately wanting a Benedict game worn, tickets in hand I went to get a pint and re take my seat for the second period. The period opened with very defensive play from both sides so it was pure elation when George Awada scored ten minutes in assisted by Wally and Tommy Walsh (who got my biggest cheer!) Ben Campbell spoiled the party by ruining the chance of Murph having another shut out by scoring on the breakaway.

The unbeatable trio of Szwez, Shieldsy and Bateman struck again adding to the Giants goals and tying the score at 4-1 going into the third. Szwez completed his hat trick and my husband even joked that all he has to do is get an assist and a fight for a Gordie Howe hat trick-he wasn't far from the truth! At the start of the third Ryan Jorde was tapping Bateman to drop the gloves and fight, he declined but Szwez stepped up and fought for his team, Szwez got him down but Jorde got more hits in so it was an evenly fought match. The atmosphere was electric and Peaks and Chevy both scored to give a 6-1 win to the Giants.
