Olympic Hockey Scims style

Olympic Hockey Scims style

Like most of you out there, I have been watching the Olympics and naturally the hockey most of all. Sometimes watching games at an unearthly hour that only my hockey friends can undisputedly testify to, and getting glances off others who think I must have a screw or two loose in my head. Fact is, I am a hockey fan and if I could get ESPN in my flat (costs determining otherwise) then I would have the complete hockey lifestyle.  Life would be perfect in every shape or form, add a female hockey fan that is as mad as me on the sport for a permanent companion, and well you can’t argue with that can you?

So as a Scimitars fan I could quite easily have supported any of five nations in Vancouver, let me explain why:

Sweden – the 2006 Olympic Champions.  Home of Peter Forsberg, Henrik Zetterberg and Nicklas Lidstrom.  In a Scims sense, also home of former Scims Patrik Moberg and most recently enough, Joakim Millqvist.  Full of flair and panache, they have that in abundance.  Until he left the Scims, I was actually Millqvist’s road jersey sponsor so there’s a good reason for them being a choice.

Finland – Silver medallists four years ago, and the country which produces an endless stream of quality players and net minders in bucket loads.  This is also the home country of “The Almighty” Pasi Raitanen, aka “The Bear”: one of the soundest blokes in UK ice hockey and always willing to stop for a minute to have a chat with you and asking how you are.  Pasi is in no doubts, a club legend in Scims folklore.

Slovakia – Another country that produces such gifted hockey players.  Witness first hand players such as Marian Gaborik, Michal Handzus, Miroslav Satan and Marian Hossa to name just four.  Yet at the Scims, we have Captain Fantastic himself – yes Peter “The Slammer” Slamiar.  The fact I had Slamiar on my home shirt last season, shows the respect I have for the former New York Rangers draft pick.  Added to that he’s a great guy off-ice.

Czech Republic – A country that never ceases to leave my heart.  I have been to Prague more times than I can I have been to say, in comparison – Ibiza.  This country brought us Jaromir Jagr, whose number adorns my current home jersey: 68.  It is also the home country of Zdenek Sikl, who was one of the four imports signed by the Scims last season and a popular guy in what was a bit of a disappointing Scims season.

Canada – The home of hockey, and the hosts.  Very, very can be said about what Canada has brought to hockey – most of it all is pretty self explanatory anyway.  Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux: shall I go on?  Canada brought the Scims Jason Davies (wish we still had him), Kyle Schutte (one match fruit loop), “Rocket” Ron Shudra and of course Mark Stewart – whose road shirt I am now getting instead of Joakim’s.

So who did I decide on?  Yes, it was obvious from the start I supported the home nation and even if it hadn’t been in Vancouver I still would have.  Given my hero is Martin Brodeur, and everyone knows that it is, I just had to.  Marty didn’t have a great tournament to be frank, but the guys pulled through and I was sat there in my Team Canada shirt in my living room when Crosby popped up to wrist shot a five holer past “Unscoreonable” Ryan Miller.   Cue me going mental as if I was in Vancouver itself, it was a great feeling.  “Miracle Part 2” is on hold again for the Americans, who really thought it was their time.  Now can Team Canada defend in Sochi four years on?  You bet your life I will be hoping so.

In closing this blog, I’d like to give a few awards out:

Player of the Tournament: Agreed it was Ryan Miller of Buffalo and the US.  Now if he was a Canadian, he’d be an auto pick for sure.

Underachiever Award: I can’t spilt between Ovechkin in the QF against Canada, and my hero Marty.  Both didn’t have the best of games.

Scare of Tournament: Switzerland taking Canada to penalty shots.  Man that was frightening!

Team of Tournament: Between Canada for pulling through when it mattered, and the US for giving signs they are getting back to becoming a decent side.
