Squeaky bum time? Not yet

 

I still can’t find that bloody black cat that gave us so much luck at the start of the season, it must have found a new owner I guess.  Yes, it’s been another frustrating week for the Scims, with not once but twice having defeat snatched away from the jaws of victory.  Two wins which would have been a great morale boost, but as you know fate doesn’t work that way.  Now I really know what those long suffering Portsmouth football fans are going through…it’s pure hell!

 

Saturday last began in the time honoured tradition, me at college in the morning with my fellow student Sean McMorrow!  Both of us were left disappointed though as we waited for the result of the exam we had sat the other weekend.  Since the exam has to be marked twice by two separate people, the second person had been off with illness and as such it didn’t get marked.  Hopefully, that is going to be rectified in time for tomorrow morning (Saturday).  Here’s to some potentially good news I guess.

 

After being enthralled by Pools comeback against Leeds, twice, and Sir Jeff Stelling going ballistic by humming the theme from The Sweeney (OK, I did too) in celebration – it was time to get off to the rink for the great 6^th vs 7^th battle in the EPL.  That being the Scims against the Peterborough Phantoms, and a chance to share some good pre-match banter with my Phantom supporting friends.  Obviously, we wished each other the best of luck but I really did think, this would be a win for us and the winless drought was finally at an end.

 

The game itself was an absolute crackerjack.  Suppose you had never been to a hockey game before, and wanted to know what it was like – well you would be hooked after this encounter.  5-1 up going into the third, you would have laid serious money on us winning this.  The Phantoms were all over the place, Morgan and MacIver were in “goon” mode although “Big” Ben Wilson had turned a few of their heads when he came onto the ice to rapturous cheers from us, and new Phantoms coach Tim Peacock had been “kicked out” after arguing the point with referee Dave Goodwin at the end of the second.  Scims win, as I said you’d think so.

 

Yet the throwing out of their coach seemed to be catalyst that the Phantoms needed, either that or someone had heard me saying that I didn’t think the game was over til it was.  What followed between the 48^th and 53^rd minute of the game, was a collapse of cataclysmic proportions.  Somehow we leaked four unanswered goals and given the Phantoms a lifeline they really didn’t deserve.  You couldn’t really make it up.  And so to overtime, and the completion of the biggest comeback since Lazarus when Morgan rubbed salt into a very open wound by scoring the game winner 53 seconds in.  I was numbed, not even my customary post-match pint could make me feel better.  God knows what it was like in our locker room…

 

Sunday was no better.  After seeing the football team get beaten 6-3 by a very ordinary side who just wanted to play long ball all the time, the lads lost 3-1 at Bracknell despite giving a very good account of themselves.  How worse was it going to get, mind you we only had Milton Keynes to play on Wednesday just gone.  Easy game, well er not really as they are flying high at the top of the table.  But after two periods we had made them look very ordinary, deservedly 3-1 up and playing well.  Ghost of Saturday banished, well you’d think so wouldn’t you?

 

 Except this particular ghost refused to be exorcised, and the Lightning flashed four goals past Ben Bowns in that third period.  The second time in successive home games it had happened, and it felt just as bad. Not even the consoling words from MK netminder Barry Hollyhead and his captain Adam Carr (two friends of mine) that the best team lost; couldn’t mask the pain we are going through.  The run has been horrific, probably the worst I have ever seen from my team in the time I have watched hockey.  But it has to change, and hopefully on Saturday against Swindon Wildcats.  The Wildcats have won at Ice Sheffield already so it won’t be easy, and I am sure Chris “Disco” Douglas will want to keep his good form going too. Might get some moves out of him if he really wants to entertain us.  You know you want to Chris…

 

Saturday is also my mate and fellow Scims fan Ian’s birthday so what better present than a long awaited home win.  Here’s to it eh?  The Winter Olympics also start this weekend, and I have decided to not place a bet on Team Canada to win hockey gold despite saying previously I would.  At even money, it’s simply got no value on it.  Sorry Marty, Sidney et al…
