That's more like it Steelers

That's more like it Steelers by James Broughton

Hello again everyone. Well it’s fair to say that Sheffield is a much happier hockey town on Monday than it was last Thursday. In my last blog going into the weekend, I like so many others complained about the woeful performance by the Steelers against the Panthers. I said that we lacked fight, spirit and Passion. Well i got all 3 over the weekend and we ended level with the giants taking 2 points each.

Saturday night started with the much anticipated bout between Mr Mike Sgroi and Mr Sean Mcmorrow. Here we have a couple of out and out heavyweights. Some people have said it was a draw but for me McMorrow just edged it. I thought he landed one or two more and Sgroi went down first. So the dance was over for the time being and the hockey started. The Steelers came out very hard and really worked the giants. Several body checks seemed to knock Belfast of their game and the Steelers were well on top. Then a really hard hit by Randy Dagenais sparked a scrap between the Steelers defenceman and Walsh of the Giants. This time it was a victory for the Steelers. So Far so good and the crowd were well into the game. In the second a well worked move saw Joey Talbot put Sheffield in front. Sadly that was our only goal but it wasn't for lack of effort. Stephen Murphy was excellent from that point on. The ever impressive Colin Shields leveled for the visitors. Then it was Pat Bateman who put them ahead. The final nail in the coffin was an empty net goal by Faubert. Final Score 3-1 Belfast. Despite the loss the Steelers were a much better team than the one who played against the Panthers.

So we went into Sunday with a bit of hope a bit of dare i say belief. Well we were right to do so. The game was very similar to the previous evening. The sides exchanged chances for around 15 minutes then out of nothing Jonathan Zion skates down the wing and rips one past Stephen Murphy. It was a bullet but the fancy Murphy would want it back. Jeff Szwez pulled it back on the powerplay only for Bolibruck to scramble the Steelers back ahead. The second saw Szwez level again but Jeff Legue put the Steelers in front for a third time. So 2 periods 3-2 up, 2 powerplay goals and playing well generally for the second night in a row. We were all happy but could we kill off the Giants and get the 2 much needed points? Yes we could. Doug Sheppard scored our 3rd powerplay goal to put us in command. It was made scary by Belfast as Faubert scored with 62 seconds left with the goalie pulled. The Steelers hung on though and got the win.

They deserved it. The Steelers worked hard all weekend and were perhaps a little unlucky to get beat Saturday but Sunday oh Sunday we got the 2 points and the players showed how they can perform. Now Guys your challenge us to play like that the rest of the season. There is no good reason why you cant and if you want the respect of the fans back then it is what you have to do. For now though congratulations on a good weekend.
