Who is Greg Owen?

In 1998, Greg Owen made his first appearance in hockey by playing for Great Britain’s under 18′s squad. In just three games, Owen scored 2 goals and received 6 penalty minutes. It wasn’t in till 1999 Greg joined a club. Unlike most British youngsters, Owen went into the SJH League and played for the Notre Dame Hounds. The SJHL is a Junior A league, as part of the Canadian Junior Hockey League and is open to all North American-born players under or at the age of 20. Owen spent three seasons with the Notre Dame Hounds while playing for Great Britain’s under 18′s and 20′s along side. Sadly, no statistics are available for Owen while he played for the Hounds, and it wasn’t in till he moved back to the UK and played for Bracknell Bees for the 2002/03 season that we really saw what he could do.

His first season in the UK was a busy one. As he moved from Bracknell bees after only eighteen games to Milton Keynes Lighting, where he went on to score an incredible 40 goals in thirty-six games and ended the season with sixty-three points, and as a EPL Playoffs champion.

Having only moved to Milton Keynes Lighting mid season, Owen left MK Lighting and went back to Bracknell Bees for the up coming season. The Bees ended the 2003/04 season as runners up in the British National League Playoffs, with Owen finishing his second season with 38 points from thirty-six games, and re-signing to the Bees for the 2004/05 season. That season, the Bees won the British National League Champions and the National Cup, with Owen finishing his third season with 29 points from thirty-five games.

The Northampton born forward, then went on to play in the Elite league for the Basingstoke Bison. In thirty games, Owen only managed to rack up 12 points, and went on to continue his international career for Great Britain. After finishing his duty with Team GB, Owen came back to Basingstoke. While playing for Basingstoke Bison for the 2006/07 season, something seemed to click with the line he played on. With Greg Chambers and Brad Cruikshank by his side, Owen’s game dramatically changed. He ended the 2006/07 season with a incredible 52 points from fifty-four games. Bison was quick to re-sign Greg Owen for the 2007/08 season and yet again, he racked up the points. Although Bison never won anything with Owen there, Owen went on to finish the season with 54 points in fifty-three games. After another successful season, Owen returned to international duty yet again, and once he returned, he decided to make a big move.

Greg Owen decided to move out of British hockey and make the move to France. Playing for Briancon, Owen scored 6 goals with 15 assists giving him a points total of 21 in twenty-five games. Although Owen had a successful league run, he didn’t do to great in the playoffs. Scoring only once in twelve games and getting just 2 assists. Despite the bad Playoffs run, Owen helped his international squad to reach a new high, when they won the Bronze medal in the World Championships after beating Poland in a dramatic overtime win. Owen then made the move back to Britain with the Coventry Blaze, who also later signed Owen’s former Bison team mates Greg Chambers and Brad Cruikshank for the 2009/10 season. Owen returned to the Elite league with success, scoring 27 goals and 18 assists giving him 45 points in forty-six games, and helped the Coventry Blaze win the Elite League title.

During the off season, there was some who wondered – and hoped – if Owen would return to the Blaze for another season. It has now been announced that Greg Owen has signed a new deal that will keep him with the Blaze for the next two seasons. So, the now twenty-nine year old forward is with the Coventry Blaze for the next two seasons and will hopefully continue to improve at club level and international.
