Interview with Belfast's Evan Cheverie

Interview with Belfast's Evan Cheverie

Here the man of the moment Evan Cheverie takes time out from the closing games of the season to talk to British Ice Hockey.  A surprise return to the Giant's roster this season lets hope he'll be around in a Giant's jersey for many seasons to come!

SM: Tell us about the real Evan Cheverie; likes, dislikes, hobbies, etc.
EC: The real Evan Cheverie is simply an easy going guy. I definitely enjoy my down time, I have no problems sleeping in if given the opportunity. I like to relax, sit down and read the paper while drinking coffee nothing extravagant. I also like going to the movies and watching Hockey Night In Canada especially during the play offs. Don Cherry's is a beauty!

SM: How does playing for the Belfast Giants in the Elite league compare to your previous experience?
EC: Playing for the Belfast giants has been great thus far. The travel can be tough at times however we have a great equipment manager in Taff (Jason Ellery) he makes life as easy as possible for the players when travelling. The city has been great, it kind of reminds me of home. After playing in France and Norway it has been a breath of fresh air to be able to talk and joke around with people here in Belfast.

SM: Talk me through a typical day as a Giant.
EC: Typical day as a Giant: up at 7:30am, small breakfast, practice at 9:00 until 10:30. Head to the gym for an hour then grab some lunch. On game days it's practice in the morning, video session at some point, grab a pre game meal maybe a small nap then head to the rink around 4:30pm for a 7:00pm game.

SM: What has been your best moment this season?
EC: Best moment this season has yet to come

SM: How does living and working in Belfast compare to where you have previously lived?
EC: Living and working in Belfast is great. As i said early the people here are easy to talk to and have a laugh.

SM: In your opinion how does the EIHL compare to the ECHL and the AHL?
EC: The EHIL is very different from the ECHL and AHL. I would say it is very similar to the ECHL in that the size of the roster is similar and the calibre of player is similar. The AHL i would say the intensity level is the is noticeably higher for several reasons. Teams carry 4 full lines at all times and players are highly motivated being that they could be called up to the NHL at any time.

SM: Coming towards the end of the season which players would you like to see back in the Giants next season?
EC: I would be happy to have everyone back

SM: It was a nice surprise seeing you back in a Giants jersey for the 2009/10 season, was that an easy decision to make?
EC: I had opportunities to go to other places but ultimately when i sat back and looked at things from all angles it became an easy decision, I am happy in Belfast

SM: If you could play for an NHL side which would you choose?
EC: I would definitely play for any of the original six teams. I would say Toronto, Montreal, Boston would be my top three picks. To be part of the history within those organizations would be something special I think

SM: Who is your favourite hockey player of all time?
EC: Favourite player is Wayne Gretzky, then Mario Lemeuix I don't think there will be players as good as those two for a long time

SM: Who has been the biggest influence in your life?
EC: Biggest influence would have to be my parents, they raised me well, I couldn't ask for a better childhood

SM: Where do you see yourself in five years time?
EC: In five years time I see myself working in the business world in some shape or form, coming home to a small family and possible coaching minor hockey

SM: What has been your proudest moment?
EC: Proudest moment not sure really I have had many, graduating university., completing my mba, I guess just being able to say that I have played professional hockey all over the world is something I think I will look back on and be proud of

SM: How do the Belfast fans compare to other fans you've played in front of?
EC: Belfast fans are great, they are very supportive, yet they will let you know when they are upset....fair enough, that's sports. All in all the fans are great they definitely love their hockey.

SM: Which of your fellow players were you looking forward to playing with the most?
EC: Brandon Benedict, he is from the same part as Canada as me and I highly recommended him to Steve Thornton last summer. He's been a great addition to the team.

SM: Do you have any superstitious rituals you do before playing a match?
EC: I generally have a game day routine which a follow, nothing odd I just do things in a certain order. Most of it is just natural behaviour, if I am not in order it doesn't change my mind set I just keep rolling

SM: Who else in the league has impressed you this season?
EC: I have been impressed with the Sheriff Sean McMorrow. He does his roll as good as I have ever seen. He wears the belt in this league that's for sure

SM: If you weren't a hockey player what would you be doing career wise?
EC: If I wasn't a hockey player I don't know what I would be doing. I think I would take a shot at wall street or canary wharf in London

SM: If you had three wishes to be granted what would you wish for?

EC:That I live a long, healthy, happy life!
