Devils go into their mouth-watering Play-Off series against Sheffield next week in great heart following this hammering of Capitals, with Stevie Lyle posting his fifth shutout of the season, making only 15 saves against a visiting side who end their own regular season having lost their last six. 

Capitals gave a full game to their back up goaltender Craig Holland and it was certainly a baptism of fire for the youngster as he saw 51 shots fired on him by a relentless Devils offence who finally broke his resistance in the third period, scoring five times.

Devils were ahead after only 26 seconds when Mark Smith (26th) fired home and the only surprise was that it took until 16.46 for Smith (27th) to add a second.

The second period saw an outstanding display by Holland, keeping Devils at bay with the only goal scored from 18 shots fired on him being that scored by Phil Hill (23rd) at 33.02.

Devils then pushed home their domination in the third period as Capitals wilted. Only 40 seconds in and Wes Jarvis (23rd) made it 4-0 at after that further counters came from Jamie Hayes (1st) at 42.27, Jay Latulippe (17th) at 50.46, Hill (24th) at 55.23 on the powerplay and finally Matt Miller (30th) at 59.12 to end a very long night for the visitors.
