Game report

Cardiff found themselves 3-0 down with 77 seconds of the second period remaining and looked to be heading to their fourth consecutive loss. But they pulled back a goal and no one was prepared for what happened in the third period.

The home side completely turned the game on its head in the third period as they hit Newcastle with a six goal blitz with the loss of only one to take the points.

Until that onslaught in the third period it looked as though Newcastle were going to get their first back to back road wins since they beat Nottingham back in October and then Sheffield a week later.

Newcastle opened the scoring with a strike from Matic Kralj (25th) at 4.43 and doubled their lead with a goal from Brent Hughes (5th) at 15.27. Despite being out shot in the opening session the visitors took a 2-0 lead into the locker room at the end of the first period.

The hosts again had the better of the second period as they out shot their opponents 17-7 but despite their superiority they found themselves further behind as Mike Berry (28th) scored on the powerplay at 25.15. The home side finally got on the board at 38.43 as Max Birbraer (26th) found a way past Robinson.

With just over a minute and a half of the third period played the game was all square as Tyler Michel (17th/18th) hit a brace the first on the powerplay at 41.08 and then at 41.36. Ryan Finnerty (11th) then put the hosts in front as he struck home at 44.31 and Matt Miller (28th) gave them a two goal lead with a goal at 49.16.

Having got over the shock of the Devils turning a three goal deficit into a two goal lead Matic Kralj (26th) with his second goal of the game pulled one back at 49.31. But the home side were not finished as Phil Hill (21st) added another at 55.03. In a last ditch effort Newcastle pulled the goaltender but it was the home side who had the last say as Mark Smith (23rd) found the empty net at 59.41.
