Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier believes his Excel Hull Stingrays side are “starting to get it together” after registering a third successive Elite League win by beating Edinburgh Capitals 5-3 at Hull Arena.
Konstantin Kalmikov put Stingrays ahead, Marc Lefebvre and (powerplay) and Simon Lambert (delayed penalty goal) edged Edinburgh in front before goals from Curtis Huppe (powerplay), Lee Mitchell and Jason Silverthorn saw the home side in the driving seat. Jeff Hutchins (powerplay) pulled a goal back but George Halkidis (powerplay) secured the points.
Cloutier, whose side beat Edinburgh 4-3 on penalty shots on Saturday night, said: “It was a big weekend for us and two great wins. We found a way to come back and win a hockey game. We were asleep in the first period and let Edinburgh outwork us and outplay us and I was disappointed with that. But the guys regrouped and came out hard and our leaders stepped up and did a job for us. We need that every weekend now. We need our key guys to get going and they are starting to get going.
“It takes time but we are finally getting bodies back in the line-up. I have said all along people need to be patient. We have been short-handed all year but finally we are rolling three lines and people can see we are starting to get it together. We haven’t been able to score goals but now the goals are coming. It was only a matter of time before they started to go in. We have to keep that going. We have some confidence now.”
