Coventry Blaze Head Coach, Paul Thompson has today confirmed that the club has parted company with Canadian defenceman, Chris Allen.  Allen joined the club as cover for the injured Matt Soderstrom in mid December after being released by the Edinburgh Capitals.

Allen played ten games for the Blaze, before the return of Soderstrom to the line up last weekend saw him scratched from the line up for both games against the Hull Stingrays.  It had been Thompson’s intention to carry a spare overseas trained player until the end of the season but he agreed to the player’s release after Allen asked to leave.

“I understand his position,” said Thompson.  “He’s not a rookie.  He’s thirty-one and he wants to be playing every game and I’m not able to guarantee him that.  With Chris, we had eleven overseas trained players and we can only play ten for any game, but I was hoping to be able to carry the extra one as cover for injuries and to give me the chance to rest players at times during our run in.  That situation is not for every player though and it’s not for Chris.”

“I do want to say a big thank you to Thommo for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the Blaze,” said Allen before leaving the club.  “He’s a great coach and person and the Blaze organisation is top notch.

“I have no doubt that the Blaze can go on to win the Championship and much as I’d love to be a part of that, I really want to be playing regularly.  I’m thirty-one years old and I don’t have much playing time left so sitting in the stands for games doesn’t sit as well for me now as it did when I was nineteen and in the NHL.”

Allen is now planning to return to North America before the signing deadline and Thompson confirmed that he is almost certain to go with the standard ten overseas trained players for the rest of the season.
