The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
Invicta Dynamos Head Coach Kevin Parrish has made his first move of an off season still in its infancy by securing the return of the club’s all time highest points’ scorer Andy Smith for 2011/12. Smith was selected as the club’s ‘Forward of the Year’ at the recent awards night that marked the close of 2010/11 and has become the first to commit himself to the club again before the puck hits the ice in September.
Andy Smith first wore Dynamos’ colours in 2004/05 and since then has gone on to become the team’s talisman with some 350 goals and 321 assists in 246 games making him the club’s leading scorer with 671 points. Most recently, in 2010/11, he led from the front yet again with a formidable 48 goals and 54 assists in the campaign taking his tally for the year into three figures at 102. Now he will return looking to spearhead the attack yet again but this time the unstoppable forward will hope to not only lead on the scoresheet but also by example as he dons the ‘C’ following the retirement of former captain Karl Lennon.
Speaking on the return of his key forward Head Coach Kevin Parrish revealed he was very pleased Andy Smith would be staying put in Gillingham especially given that the skater always receives offers from elsewhere. Parrish said, “Naturally we are delighted that Andy has chosen to remain with us. When you play like he does you will undoubtedly attract attention from other teams but time and time again he opts to stay with the Dynamos and this just demonstrates both his commitment and how he feels about the club”. It is this dedication that has now seen the forward been given the ‘C’ of captain and Coach Parrish has little doubt that Smith is up to the task. Parrish said, “If you have seen Andy play in recent seasons his effort and desire is beyond doubt. When the squad needs someone to step up to the mark he is always there and he has more the earned respect of his teammates with his performances during his time here. I have no doubt he will be an excellent captain”.
Since donning the club’s shirt in 2004/05 Andy Smith has played a key role in helping the team secure six league titles, two playoff titles, a cup victory and two national championships. Now he will be hoping to lead the Dynamos back to the top of the pack in an increasingly tough ENIHL South as the team uncharacteristically suffered a year without silverware in 2010/11. Being from the local area and enjoying a strong relationship with the team’s supporters, Smith would like nothing more than to lift a trophy as captain this time next year.
