Phantoms are delighted to announce, after a nailbiting delay of several days, the signing of 28 year old Canadian defenceman Doug MacIver.

MacIver, a native of Ontario, spent last season with Elite League Cardiff Devils but has a top drawer pro-pedigree that saw him play in the American Hockey League  with Rochester Americans. At 6' 5" and 235lbs, MacIver is gauranteed to make an impact in more ways than one as club director Jon Kynaston enthusiastically proclaimed. "This is a big signing for us in every sense of the word, Doug has a presence about him that is going to add a real something to our squad. Over the years we have built a strong home record and teams never relish coming here but now they may not even relish coming into our end of the ice ! All of our research indicates that we are getting a committed team guy that will add size and presence to our team and that will stand up for his teammates as well as adding that extra experience to our D and hopefully to our special teams".

MacIver's signing has been held up recently as the player was waiting for an ancestral visa to play in the UK, given that his grandparents were Welsh. Prior to that, the player was the subject of offers from several EPL clubs but Kynaston was confident that the player was Peterborough bound, "we had been tracking Doug for some time and several agents were courting him into the UK but, after discussing the options with some of his former teammates, Doug was clear he only wanted to play in Peterborough". For our part, Doug Irwin, Paul Bignell and I had looked at numerous defensive options and MacIver came through as the resounding best option for us and we are really looking forward to him getting here and getting him out with his new teammates. He's very much a different signing for this club but I'm totally convinced this guy will be an overnight cult hero in Peterborough and be another strong character for the team".

Fellow director Phil Wing was equally delighted at securing MacIver's signing  and simply added "Doug's going to help us fight our way up the league table ...... he is definitely going to make an impact !"

MacIver himself was keen to return to Europe after playing in Cardiff last season, "I had two successful seasons in Europe and decided I wanted to come back to the US for a season. I was recently married and my wife is in her final year at University here. Things maybe didn't turn out the way I thought they would, so I decided to look back overseas. I wanted to take my time and find the right situation for me not only on the ice, but off the ice as well. I contacted several of my friends in the UK when making my decision. The Phantoms have a great history winning trophy's and I know they have great fan support and I'm really looking forward to joining the team and doing whatever I can to help us win games".

In terms of defensive attributes, Doug added, "I see myself as a defenceman who plays hard and I try to lead by example. Adding a physical pressence when I am on the ice tends to give myself and teamates more room. With my point production the last few seasons overseas, I have also shown that I can do more than just play physical and fight".

On the subject of fighting, Phantoms new D-man was very clear about the role he needs to play on the team, "for most of my career I have been known as a good tough defenceman first and a fighter second. Usually, when I'm at the top of my game, fights tend to come and find me but I'm very aware that it's hard to help your team win from the penalty box so it all comes down to knowing when it is the right time !"

Although MacIver, who will wear shirt #64, should arrive in the UK on Friday, Phantoms are facing a race against time to complete the paperwork needed to ice him this weekend and his chances of making a debut against either Guildford (A) on Saturday or Milton Keynes at home on Sunday are currently rated at less than 50/50.
