After their sensational performance on Wednesday night, when they came within 10 minutes of beating Elite League neighbours Newcastle Vipers in a challenge game, it’s back to English National League action for champions Whitley Warriors on saturday when they travel to take on Trafford Metros.

With two wins from two ENL games – without conceding goal – Whitley have made the perfect start to their defence of the title, but player/coach Simon Leach is warning his player not to let Wednesday’s achievements get in the way of their main goal.

“We have to build on that performance,” he said, “we aren’t going to reach the those heights every night, but we showed against Newcastle exactly what we are capable of; and I will be looking to the players to put on the same kind of performance at Trafford.

“We skated hard and worked hard for each other the other night and if we can do that again, I’m confident we will get the two points to maintain our title defence.”

However, Leach may still be missing one or two players: “We probably brought Andy Thornton and Paul Windridge back from injury too quickly when they played in the win over the Northern Stars,” he said.

“Both are probably nearing fitness, but whether we need to wait a week or two to make sure, I will have to see; because I would rather they missed an extra game than come back too soon and be out for a longer spell this time.”

Whitley have already beaten the Metros 2-0 in the opening game of the season at Hillheads and Leach knows his Pantrini’s sponsored side will face another tough test.

“They had a stand-out goalie that night and will probably have a few more players than travelled to Hillheads,” he added, “but providing we play to our potential and show the same desire that was evident on Wednesday, I’m sure we are more than capable of collecting the victory.”

Leach also confirmed that the Warriors have re-signed defenceman Ali Brummitt, although it is unlikely his registration will be through in time for him to travel to Trafford.

“Ali came into training last week and showed me he is still more than capable of doing a good job for the Warriors,” said the coach.

“And with Dale Howey now unavailable while he undertakes his Fire Service training, Ali will be the ideal replacement.”

The Warriors next game at Hillheads is on Sunday September 26th when they host Sheffield Spartans in a game that will start at the new face-off time of 5.00pm.
