This weekend saw the curtain fall on what has been a tough season for the Bracknell Bees, as despite recording their biggest winning margin of the year they fell agonisingly short of the final playoff spot.

Nicky Watt opened the scoring after just one minute in, with the Raiders having to ice young Frankie Sabine in place of an absent Charles Kaylor it always looked like it would only go one way. Bees Captain Terry Miles doubled the bees lead just three minutes later before Nicky Watt once more came to force, and despite a hand injury recorded both his second and third goals soon after, a hat trick for the Bees top British scorer in little over five minutes. By the end of the first the home team found themselves with a 6-0 lead with Greg Randall and newly crowned EPL player of the year Jaroslav Cesky putting points on the board.

Any signs of easing off were squashed early in the second as Michal Pinc combined with Cesky at 21.42 to take the advantage to seven goals. However the one result that had eluded the Bracknell side all season once more disappeared at 25.15 as Romford’s Matt Turner took away hopes of a shut out, putting his teams first goal on the score sheet before Greg Randall posted his second of the night, closely followed by Adam Bicknell to send the teams in at the forty minute mark with the score line set at 9-1.

Despite Romford’s best efforts the Bracknell goals kept coming, Michal Pinc with his second of the night, player coach Claude Dumas with two in the space of fourteen seconds and Shane Moore tying the Bees scoring up at thirteen goals in just shy of fifty minutes. The Bees had a number of other chances to continue their points tally but found Romford’s backup keeper Andrew Boot in sterner form than his younger counterpart. This allowed the Raiders to rally to a certain extent, with import Josef Sladok and Captain Danny Marshall finishing the game at 13-3.

Unsurprisingly Nicky Watt picked up the man of the match beers for his impressive tally of three goals and four assists, with future prospect Frankie Harvey taking the honours for the visiting team. Despite such a big score line in what was a must win game, there was a certain disappointment in the air around the Hive. Not at our own team, but at the good fortunes of playoff spot rivals Swindon Wildcats, beating the Manchester Phoenix in emphatic style. Hope was restored the following evening when the ‘Cats lost to an inform Basingstoke Bison placing the playoff future of the Bees back in their own hands. A win for Bracknell in Manchester was never going to be easy, and was made even more difficult thanks to a two hour delay of the face off due to a broken down coach.  Despite finally making it to the rink the Bees were never really in the game, soon falling behind and eventually loosing 10-1. A sad end to what has been an entertaining season, but many Bracknell fans may be left disappointed that arguably the best import partnership in the league never made it to the playoffs.
