Belfast Giants 5 - 3 Nottingham Panthers
The Aer Lingus Belfast Giants remain at the top of the Elite League standings with a 5-3 win over the Nottingham Panthers.
The had only just started when the Giants took the lead through Craig Peacock who shot home from the top of the crease catching Craig Kowalski sleeping with only 14 seconds on the clock. The Giants lead however was short lived as as the Panther got back on level terms through Guillaume Lepine at 1:30.
Just past the seven minute mark the Panthers look the lead as Dustin Sproat shot past Murphy to put the away team up 2-1 but much in the same fashion the Giants tied things up through Colin Shields who’s one time shot tricked across the line as Kowalski couldn’t trap the puck after making a save.
Danny Myers sent the Panthers into the period break with a slender lead and he was allowed to skate in one on one with Murphy as the Giants defence was caught on a line change.
A penalty filled second period saw each team with numerous powerplay opportunities however despite the best efforts of the offensive players the defence and netminders held tight for 20 minutes and the period remained scoreless.
The Giants struck three times in the final period to put some daylight between the teams. At 42:29 Mike Bayrack beat Kowalski 5-hole to even thing up and Colin Shields added what would be the eventual game winner at 48:44 when he converted a pass from Mark Garside to switch momentum in favour of the home team.
The Panthers made life uncomfortable for the Giants for the remaining 10 minutes testing Murphy with shot after shot that was either saved or blocked en route. With 5 seconds left on the clock Mike Bayrack added an empty net goal to leave the scoreboard showing Belfast Giants 5, Nottingham Panthers 3.
